I couldn't disagree more with the people that say they shouldnt celebrate so much. I could type out a long response and tell all the reasons why, but I'm too lazy and it would probably just make me mad haha

I should've clarified. They are not role models to kids. Middle aged, washed up adults...absolutely!

 

I think that last night was still fine. I'm pretty sure their celebratory festivities did not in any way shape or form lead kids to believe that they can become a successful pro baseball player if they drink and smoke after every major victory in their lives...... I was a kid not that long ago, and I remember very distinctly being able to recognize the difference between being a child athlete and an adult athlete.

 

If these guys had been cursing and talking about going to go do drugs etc. then yes that would be a different story.

In the NBA 16 teams make the playoffs. In the NFL, 12 teams make it. Baseball there is only 8, six of which being the only division winners. I could see were celebration can be warranted in baseball. It is a long grind it out season, so maintaining and playing good enough all year to make it to where it counts deserves some type of celebration.

I am fine with the celebrating, I have just always felt baseball goes way over the top with it. Besides throwing a next day parade, there is really not a whole lot of difference between the celebrations of clinching a playoff spot and winning the World Series.

There was a time when it was important to win the Pennant. Now you tell me that's not the case. There was a time when it was important to be a Division winner in Baseball, now you tell me that is not the case. Sorry, I don't buy into your jaded cynicism of "winner take all" mentality. I still celebrate the effort in "running the race" and celebrate a little more with each step and title added. BTW, many a coach will tell you to "live in the precious present." That's all those guys were doing last night.

 

It is definitely not my youth, so it must be my inability to comprehend what you were stating. As I stated I'm OK with winning and celebrating, and I understand you must win a pennant (or wild card) to make it to the NLDS but I do like the phrase 'act like you have been there before' realizing most of the Reds have not been there. At the micro soccer level, a pat on the back, participation trophy and a snack at half time is fine. These guys are professionals and they are paid to win. There are milestones but the big prize is still out there, it's called a World Series Championship. I'll conclude this post with a quote the legendary Vince Lombardi.

I'm completely fine with celebrating a division title. In a sport with no salary cap, how many teams have a real chance at winning the World Series in a given year... 2? 3? There are such things as small victories and those should be celebrated.
