I agree on the Steinbrenner point. Of course not many put their resources toward fixing it.

 

I'd love to know what percentage of his resources he's used to fix it. It's easy to spend resources when your resources are unlimited. It's easy when you can make a million mistakes and buy your way out of them.

It bothers me, but I'm one of the people that used to go to 30 games a year and I've been to 5 this year and 3 of them were day games. I'm going today too. I have a small child at home as do most of my friends that regularly went to 20+ games a year. They priced us out with high beer prices and terrible teams. The product on TV is too good also. It really isn't hard to figure that if there was a salary cap and the Reds had a chance to make the post season more than once every 15 years the attendance would be higher. My 18 year old brother has never seen a good team. Why would kids his age go when for 15 years the product has been terrible?

It would bother me more if no one was watching. That is not the case.

It's a terrible sports town b/c for 15 years they've had two terrible sports teams. Baseball isn't set up for the Reds or other small markets to succeed and Brown really doesn't want to succeed unless he quits selling tickets.

 

Cardinals and the Twins are examples of small to mid markets selling tickets and having success.

Let me tell you this. In July, my husband and I took our 5 kids to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs and Reds. It was a 1:20 game on a Friday afternoon. We advanced purchased 7 seats in the "family section" next to the left field bleachers. Parked downtown and took the Red Line to the game. We got to the game a little early and had lunch (burgers, hot dogs, shared the fries, cokes) and also bought a couple of soft pretzels and two boxes of popcorn. It was very hot that day (the 9 run, one hit debacle that the Reds ended up winning 12-0) and we also bought some bottled water to keep everyone hydrated in the sun. Then we bought the kids ice cream. The total bill for our wonderful day at the ballpark was just under $800! This was the parking, El tickets, seats, food, drinks, etc. This did not count our hotel room, transportation to Chicago, any souvenir purchases, etc.

 

My whole point is that, while I can't explain exactly why Reds fans are not showing up, I know the economy has something to do with it. MLB has made it almost impossible to take a family to the ballpark for the afternoon.

 

 

The cost is crazy. There are ways to reduce price. Some teams have specials on different nights.

 

We also pack a cooler when we go to the cardinals games. You can take water and sodas as long as they are in a plastic container. We take snacks as well.

I guess I have the wrong thoughts on Cincy. I have always thought of it as a baseball town until I went to a game there 7 years ago. We got great tickets and it was very easy to get them at the last minute. I have always thought of the big red machine and reds baseball.

 

St. Louis was terrible in the early 90s and they didn't sell out but they still had good crowds.

I understand that you can take you own food and drinks to GABP in a soft sided cooler that does not exceed the following measurements; 16" X 16" X 8". Not a bad way to save come dough.
