How much wear does he have on his arm? How many years has he really pitched? Smoltz, constantly injured. Carlton didn't throw upper nineties. Holliday either. Clemons was on Viagra, Testosterone, and HGH. Sabbathia, not upper nineties. So, going down your list, I'd say the only comparable guy is Johnson, and with many differences possibly Seaver. I think there are far more that have been injured and not returned to form than those you have listed as HOF'ers presently and in the near future.

 

Are we gonna take a flyer on this guy that he's the next Randy Johnson? For the life of me I can't understand why we are so hellbent on not using this guy to slam the friggn' door shut for the next 6 years at possibly 50 saves a season.

 

I agree. I think the situation is comparable to that of Joba Chamberlin. Chapman would be untouchable as a closer and could probably add about 6 or 7 more seasons on his arm by doing so, but I doubt the Reds do that. I believe they'll end up at least trying him as a starter.

Sadly SV, I agree with you on that. And in the event that they start him, he blows a rotator cuff or ends up needing Tommy John, I'm gonna drive over to Koun Dog's house and punch him in the nose.

Strasburg's mechanics are a receipe for disaster IMO.

If you want to get technical there has never been anyone like Chapman hurt or healthy. I'm not saying he has to be a starter or a closer. I just don't believe in making the decision based on the possibility of an injury. My question is this: would you rather Chapman be the next Nolan Ryan/Randy Johnson or the next Rivera/Sutter? Me I'll take the starter. Afterall there is no evidence that he can't get hurt closing when he could be warming up 4 or 5 times a week.

The only reason so many people think Chapman is because hes the hot name right now. If another big time arm was to come up then he would be the guy everyone wants to talk about and hype. Point is, if Strasburg never went down, never went on the DL the first time, this would not even be a close call. People were calling him potentially the greatest pitcher of all time and already anointed him as the greatest pitching "prospect" of all time. Now that hes hurt he's yesterdays news. Chapmans the hot name and hot armed prospect right now so he is getting the good pub, plus this is predominantly a pro Cinci board.

For that reason, you'd have to take Chapman. However, if I knew Strasburg could return to form, I could care less that he might have to sit a year. He'd be my pick. Chapman is an unknown. Can he be a dominant starter? Strasburg most certainly can if healthy.

So Strasburg and his hand full of starts is a know commodity? Bottom line to me is Chapman is left handed, sits at 100 mph, with a nasty slider.

But he DID! That is the point of this whole shebang! Good Lord, there were those clamoring for him to be an all star. Now Dibble is fired because he said he should suck it up. Kid's injured. May never be the same. Never really got a break from college to his trip to the show. Tooooooo many innings.
