But isn't that why you stockpile young talent? So you can trade the excess away to help the big league club win right now. The goal is to win, and if you have an opportunity to help the big league club win right now why not do it? The Reds might not have another winning season for another 5-10 years. When you are a team like the Reds, opportunities don't arise like this very often. I am completely ok with trading prospects for big league talent.

No, you don't stockpile young talent to simply trade it away. You build up your farm system so you have talented players that your organization develops on its own, instead of through trades and free agency. It's the only way most small market teams are able to compete. Why would any GM in their right mind trade away some of the best young prospects around for a guy that will only marginially improve the team? If they trade, say Alonso and Wood for Lee (Mariners wouldn't accept that, but let's for a second say they had a brain fart and did), and Lee doesn't resign, and they fail to make the playoffs, what now? Let's remember this team doesn't need starting help, they need help in the bullpen and possibly a bat off the bench. So now you're left with the same team you had before the trade, without two of your top prospects that would almost assuredly be big league ready next season. What did you gain? All you've accomplished is put your team in a much worse situation. It's especially stupid to do if Volquez and Bailey are coming back in a week or two like they say. You add the All-Star "ace" to your rotation, you've just added Bray to the bullpen, with the likes of Chapman and Burton on the immediate horizon. If this team makes any moves at the deadline, (I see no reason to, if those guys are all coming back) it should be for bullpen help, not starting pitching.

I would be willing to trade Alonso, Francisco, Heisey, Maloney or Wood (or any combination) for Cliff Lee. The M's aren't going to just GIVE Lee away to the Reds.

How do you replace what those 2 guys have given this offense? Dickerson? Heisey?

There's no sense in mortgaging your future when 1. the chances of re-signing Lee and 2; you'll have to give up a lot.

June 28, 201016 yr I'd love to see the Reds get involved, if and only if, Lee agrees to an extension before the trade. With Harang and Arroyo coming off the books they could afford it and IMO it's the only way you make the trade.

I would never do that ever but most people feel we have quite a few talented young players so we can afford to trade for help for this ball club. Those people must not know much about baseball IMO. They do have quite a few young talents, but the risk/reward of a trade for Lee isn't good enough for the Reds to seriously consider it IMO.
