Is Cursing a Crime?

Featured Replies

Pennsylvania police wrote over 700 tickets for disorderly conduct in one year for cursing.

If its not part of a threat how is it a crime?

What other bad manners should the police write citations for? Burping?

Smoking!

Smoking!

I can make an argument in my head as to why cursing and smoking are different. While I enjoy a smoke-free bar I was against Ohio requiring bars to go smoke-free. Until there are studies saying cursing (or second hand cursing) can cause health problems I can differentiate the two.

No, it shouldn't be a crime.

I'd imagine at least 600 of those 700 "criminals" cussed when they received the citation.

People that talk politics loudly and do not know what they're talking about gets my blood pressure going. Not illegal though.

Does it bother you more than seeing two guys lip-locking in public in front of your kids?

yes.

Should it be a crime since it makes us uncomfortable or since it makes our kids ask us questions?

I don't think it should be a crime. Just joking.

Of course 2 hot women is another story, right?

Of course it's not a crime. It's disorderly conduct, or what I like to call the Cop's having a bad day and you anger him/her by questioning as to why he/she is stopping you. I know we've had this converstation on here before about disorderly conduct but I think an officer should be repremanded if thier conviction rate for disorderly conduct isn't say at least 51% or higher. It's the I don't like you punishment which is almost never charged by the prosecutors office. Just one man's opinion of course.

I would be livid. This should be protected speech. I'll never understand the contempt for specific words that are synonymous with a plethora of other, perfectly acceptable words.
