Looks like my son will be attending this camp July 18-22. Can anyone tell me what to expect and how good of a camp this is?

 

My son went last year and his experience was okay. There was some downtime and not many college coaches around. We have decided to spend our camp money this year on high profile AAU tourneys and private skill development.

Let me add that for reasons I don't want to get into that we may be fortunate enough to get into an AAU tourney or two. Right now he and his teammates who will likely attend aren't doing much. For the sake of going to the camp and playing in compettive games does the camp offer quality basketball? I am not worried about what coaches are there at this point but will they get to play good competitive basketball with quality competitors? For now, that would be worth the money unless someone can tell me some better camps to attend. Kind of clueless as to which route to go for those not on an AAU team.

I'll tell you what attending the camp will do; Curtis Washington (Elizabethtown HS) attended his camp last summer and was the camp MVP, and all of a sudden he became the top rated Senior (according to Bolus Rankings) in KY for the 2009/10 school year.

 

Washington is a good player, but I question him being the #1 Senior with college potential in the entire state of KY.

 

I know he quit his team in the middle of the third quarter of one of his high school games in January 2010 and went up and sat in the bleachers and never did return to the team the rest of the season.

 

What's Washington's status? Does anyone know?

The camp is set up so that kids at the high school level play three games a day. There are stations in the morning as sanctioned by the NCAA and there are various academic, recruiting and wellness seminars throughout the week and daily practices that are 30 minutes long...also per NCAA requirements. They play in the morning, afternoon and at night. Pretty sure they play as many as the NCAA will let them play. The talent level is WAY down compared to what it was 15/20 years ago..AAU and other competitors have a lot to do with that. I will say this...if your kid is relatively young and you go every year and keep putting money in his pocket...if he's any good at all he will end up on the camp all star team at some point. He does send that out to lots of schools.

I like the way you think. Private skill development is key for my son as well this offseason.

Mainly a money deal. He has different people who rate these kids and then makes a big list on whos,who in different states. I don't piut much stock in his ratings. He still is more accurate with his ratings than the ESPN rating joke.

I think one of the best experiences for kids is attending the Five Star camps, which seemed to get them alot of exposure. Many of the coaches for these camps come from the asst coaches ranks in the NAIA, D3, or high school pool.

 

This is important because:

These guys have connections to many coaches in the college programs and they know what certain colleges are looking for in the off season

 

When they see a kid that might fill a need for a certain college they will contact a coach for that school and tell them they have a kid that they need to watch.
