That list is testimony to doing well at a highly ranked ACADEMIC high school. Regardless of how the basketball goes, these young men will be getting great educations to take them through their lives while enjoying their chosen sport in college. Congrats to all!!

 

I agree with voice on this one. These schools do not offer a lot, if any, money for athletics. These kids combined their skills on the court with great class room ethics to get these scholarships. Congrats to these 3 student athletes!

HIGHLANDS' ATHLETES SIGN TO PLAY AT COLLEGE LEVEL

 

Stephen Kowolonek, a 6-2 forward from Highlands HS, will sign with Transylvania University on Thursday, May 20, at 2:45pm in the Highlands HS library. Stephen was a three year starter for Highlands and was named to several all-district, all-conference, all area, and all-region teams. Stephen also surpassed 1,000 points in his career at Highlands.

 

Ben Watson, a 6-4 forward, will sign with Centre College on Thursday, May 20, at 2:45pm in the Highlands HS library. Ben was named to several all-district, all-conference, and all-area teams in his career. Watson was a three-year starter for the Bluebirds.

 

Garrett Smith-Keller, a 6-4 senior forward from Highlands HS, will sign with Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, at a ceremony in the Highlands HS Library on May 20, at 2:45pm. Garrett alternated between starting and a sixth-man role for the Bluebirds during his senior season and was the team’s top three-point shooter boasting a robust 40.2% from the three point stripe.

Can someone tell me a little more about Kowolonek's game. Obviously the kid can score. He is listed as a forward at 6'2", how bout his rebounding?

I thought Kowolonek was very good his sophomore and junior years. Last year he seemed off, but could have been hurt.

Kowolonek plays taller than he actually is. He has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He is a very good rebounder and scores most of his points around the basket; from offensive rebounds, back door cuts or another guard penetrating and kicking the ball to him. He is also physically strong and can finish around the rim, he has above average leaping ability and is quick off his feet.

 

If there is any area of his game that he needs to improve, is his ball handling and outside shot.

 

He didn't have a stellar senior year due to problems with his knees, but he is a great team player and fairly strong defender. He will fit in very will at Transylvania. :thumb:

A very fair assessment IMO. He was definitely not the same SK this past season and that was partly due to knee problems. He should fit in well under Brian Lane's system. He is a gamer who will play very hard and has nice athleticism.

 

On a side note, he was hooping it up today in an open gym at the HS with several other current Birds and also a couple former Birds like Nic Simpson.

They actually have legitimately 5-6 who could have gone on and played at the collegiate level but a couple chose not to pursue it and will be attending NKU. If you throw Grubbs in the mix who could have played hoops somewhere but chose football, this was a very very good SR class. They had some bad breaks with injuries this season and never really had a full squad playing together.

 

Congrats to Ben/Stephen and Garrett, they were all fun to watch throughout their careers.

I guess I did. You don't see many teams that go 14-10 and lose by 20 points in the district tourney in the 9th region that have 6 or 7 kids that could go on to play college basketball. Only at Highlands!
