The reason ND is good at other sports is all their kids play club soccer, volleyball and basketball. If you play rec soccer you will almost never have a shot to play at ND same with all the other sports. Around here there are not very many girls that play summer ball. Rec ball around here is really bad and the summer teams are not very good either. We are just behind in the area.

Why does having 8th graders pitching = walks, walks, walks. I have seen the 8th grader that pitches JV, and I can tell you that she is not a walk-fest. In fact, I believe that the JV is 5-1 including a win against Boone.

 

Beating Boone's jv is nothing to brag about. As I have said before Boone is a program that lives off of their reputation from about 10 years ago. Have done nothing as of late, but with their new coaches I see promise.

I was not bragging. I do not have a daughter on the team. My point was that just because a pitcher is an 8th grader does not mean that she is going to "walk, walk, walk" batters.

I agree, and was simply saying that BC isn't all that these days either. I want our area to get much better at fastpitch that's all. For me that is all the teams.

From what I've heard, she is not allowed to play varsity per her parents.

I am with you on our area as a whole getting better. My daughter has played in the Boone Co Rec leauge for the past 4 years. The level of competition was not very high. This year she is playing summer ball in hopes that will benifit from better competition. More girls need to have the bar raised in order to make our area better.

I agree with you. NKY is WAY behind. I do not see many good summer teams around here. I do not hear anyone playing in ASA Gold tournaments nor do I ever hear them go to the Colorado Fireworks tournament (over 200 college coaches ranging from UCLA to Junior Colleges). Just like some who play just soccer, basketball or volleyball more and more kids need to decide just to play fastpitch. Also, until NKY gets good pitching coaches who teach the mechanics right every once in awhile will a dominant pitcher come out of here. It is funny that the good pitchers from this year all go up to Cincinnati for their lessons.

 

Sorry for the tangent but it frustrates me how the majority of the teams here are weak. I did not say all, I said the MAJORITY.

It still has to start with the rec leagues. You have to learn to crawl before you can walk. Also, it is just about time for a push for middle school softball, it is happening all over the state and once again Northern Kentucky is behind.

I agree with you on this 100%. I am not sure when Boone or Kenton County start league ball but I just heard last night Campbell County starts it in the 6th grade. This is way too late. If I was running a league this is what I would do in the setup for it:

 

5 - 6: T-ball

7 - 8: Coach Pitch

8 - 10: Girl's Pitch UNTIL the hitter gets 2 strikes

11 and older: Girl's Pitch

 

It needs to start somewhere. IMO I think 8 - 10 should be strictly girl pitch but for this area kids need to develop skills. One other thing is I would change ALL leagues if they are not playing it yet, I would have them play ASA instead of USSSA or Knothole.

To be truthful-some of the best players in No. Ky have played baseball in knothole. I think we are all on the same page here-hopefully some of these suggestions will be taken up............for the Panda's-I wish them good luck the rest of the season and into the future.

I did not mean Knothole baseball but Knothole softball. In Campbell County the softball youth league had been associated with Knothole.

There are some very talented girls in NKY they are just spread out with one or two on a team. The pitching over here is what really sets us back.

 

Holy Cross has two girls that play across the river for the Cincy Doom 95. They play as competitive of a schedule as they can. They finished 33rd out of 122 at ASA A Nationals 14U as a true 13U. Unfortunately they have to travel every weekend so they can play the type of teams they need to so they are ready for Nationals.

 

This area (NKY and Cincinnati) is talent rich for soccer, it is going to be hard to get girls to switch over with club soccer going on during spring softball. It is almost impossible to play both. My daughter gave up club soccer this season bc it was just to much, of course in my opinion she is one of the more talented soccer players for her age in this area but like I said you can't do both and she had to choose.

Volleyball is Queen in NKY and Soccer is a close 2nd, if not 1st state wide....both especially at NDA as they are pushing state titles year in and year out. The NDA softball team, and most NKY/KY softball teams, do not have the best, if any, athletes in the school playing softball. Coaches have these girls convinced they HAVE TO play a sport year round to reach college - this may be true for varsity level players. However, this philosophy is being pushed down to 4th, 5th and 6th grade and parents are buying into this crap. They all think their daughters will be the next varsity star and college scholarship when the reality is that only a small percentage make it...and that's if they don't get injured. So they give up softball in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades and only play rec because it fits into their other sports schedule. Ultimately, they do not develop their softball skills in the most important development years because they play those other sports year round. One coach cannot change that social acceptance and brainwashing....it can only be changed by the school administration and in the message they send.

I agree and I may offend some, but it takes a much better all around athlete to play softball as opposed to volleyball or soccer.
