Field Tarps

Featured Replies

Just curious who all has a field tarp that covers their entire field? Ryle just got one for this season (used and needed some repairs, but is in great shape now) and it's already being put to good use.

For those of you that have had them for a few years, what is your best guess for how many extra games you got in (for all levels - varsity/JV/freshman) from using it? Lord knows this rain today would have washed out Ryle's field for days and days. With the tarp on I suspect it might be playable on Satruday. A tad wet in the outfield, of course, but playable . . . .

Do you mean the entire field, or entire infield?

Entire infield. I've never heard of a tarp that would cover the entire infield and outfield, though I suppose such an animal exists somewhere. That would be one monstrous tarp and I would think darn near impossible to roll up.

I think Boone County has one and if memory serves me correctly, Rockcastle County had purchased or was at least thinking about purchasing EKU's old one from a few years ago.

Ryle's came in handy today, as they play a game that no way, shape, or how would have been played without one. In fact, absolutely certain that any games on the field Saturday would have been washed.

Only downside to the tarp is that the rain has to go somewhere and on our field, it goes into foul territory off 1B and 3B lines and it was a muckpit in that area. But the field was in very good shape. Definitely need to plan ahead for drainage off the tarp when using one.

Montgomery Co. has one. If I'm not mistaken it is a "hand-me-down" from the Lexington Legends.

How much does a tarp cost?

A new, decent quaity full-sized infield tarp (160' x 160') will be somewhere in the $3500 range, plus shipping (which isn't cheap since it's so expensive). You also need some type of roller for it, which costs around $250. Probably a good idea to keep some tarp tape around because they occasionally get small holes/tears and the tape is also expensive (about $130 for 100' of it). All in all, not a cheap proposition.

Boone does have one that covers the whole infield. Donated by the Florence Freedom when they changed their field over to turf. Thanks to the Freedom, if not for the tarp Boone Co. would not have been able to play ther for the last 2 seasons.

Your correct it is a hand me down from Lexington Legends, but it was only one year old when MC got it. MLB changed the spects on their tarps and LL had to get a new one.

St. Henry was getting rid of their old one. Is that the one that Ryle bought? I know Cov Cath was considering purchasing their old one but I don't know what happened with that talk.

That's why you wear gym shoes when putting the tarp on and off the field.

St. Henry's field has drains, one in left field and one in right, and since the field sits on a hill, they just open the gate and the water pours down a blacktop road thing into more drains. So, St. Henry is propbably the best draining field out there.
