March 27, 201016 yr If your 28 your in your prime. Ha ya right I'm 25 and I'm pretty sure my prime was about 5-6 years ago.
March 27, 201016 yr This is a bit off subject but I have some questions. Do any of you know anyone who has played a season of competitive baseball with a torn ACL? How did they perform? My thirteen year old son tore the ACL in his left knee in a 8th grade middle school basketball game at the end of Jan(complete tear). He is a 3 sport athlete (4 if you count golf) and it has been pretty devastating for all of us. He is seeing Dr. Ireland at the UK Sports Medicine Clinic. He has not hit his major growth spurt and is considered skeletally immature and she will not perform the surgery until his growth plates close up some. She told him he could not play anymore basketball or football until after the surgery and rehab, but said that he should be able to play baseball (he is a middle infielder, but is moving to 3rd base). He has been doing strengthening exercises and PT to get ready. It has already gone out on him once, simply while he was jogging and planted to throw. He said the pain was 20 times worse than when he actually tore it (and it popped like a shotgun at that time). He has rehabed once again, is wearing a DonJoy brace and is ready to start back. Is it worth it? Baseball is his favorite and best sport. Sorry this is so long, but this has been just plain awful. Nothing good about a torn ACL
March 28, 201016 yr If he has laxity, he can do damage to cartilage, secondary restraints may get a bit more unstable. I had a patient tore her ACL in the Junior and Senior Year (right and left), and finished the season both times, having surgery afterwards. Each case will be a unique situation, in her case looking at recruitment, and was reasonably stable. His early age presents a dilemma on its own without skeletal maturity. Remember if it is his opposite knee from throwing arm, you will put his arm at risk due to lack of a stable foundation
March 28, 201016 yr Author ^any reason why when I turn my leg inward or outward that paind would be felt in the calf all the way to my ankle? This has started since seeing my ortho

Lets just say I would get a 2nd opinion and stop playing baseball, especially if he is not wearing a brace, which it sounds like.
March 28, 201016 yr Thanks for the responses. He is wearing a brace for any type of activity. It is a DonJoy brace that has straps at the thigh and calfs with the pads that rest against the knee. It looks similar to the ones you see offensive lineman or football players wear. She told us that football and basketball was a definite no, but that baseball was less stressful or however she termed it on the knee. No pitching etc.... He says it feels more stable with the brace on but I am still afraid that he will incur more damage. I know that some people live on and function without ever having surgery. Surgery is in his future he just needs to grow some. I thought that maybe someone on here knew someone who had played a season and was curious how they performed. If he has anymore problems or if it goes out again we will probably shut it down and wait on surgery.

I've heard of people playing sports with a torn ACL, but I'm not sure that they were ever fully torn; may have just been partial tears. I've torn my ACL in both knee's. It makes the knee unstable and can lead to furth injuries if it's not treated properly. I for one couldn't imagine playing baseball with a torn ACL, certainly wouldn't be anything I would choose to do. However with him being younger it may not be too hard on him given the simple fact that he'll have much less muscle and speed than if he were in his later teen years.
March 29, 201016 yr ^ My sister tore both her ACLs playing basketball in high school. First the right knee, came back after several months rehab and tore the left one early the next season. It was pretty brutal but it's amazing what orthopedic medicine can do these days.
