For anyone who has had ACL Surgery

Featured Replies

I tore my ACL and both medial and lateral meniscus about 8 years ago, and had to have my knee reconstructed and I've got a cadavar tendon in it for an ACL. Last week the knee started "catching" like it wouldn't extend all the way sometimes with out catching and popping. Since then its been fairly swolen. Went to my ortho surgeon who did the original surgery. He gave me a cortizone shot to get me thru my tryout for a job I'm trying to get next weekend and said he probably will have to scope it afterwards to clean it up. Is this common? Whats the downtime on such if you've had this, anything else I might need to know?

Sounds to me like a meniscus issue, if you are having it "catch" or not being able to lock completely out. Your ACL is probably still just fine. The meniscus might need a slight trim and that should not be anywhere near as difficult as your previous rehab. A matter of weeks.

I am not a doctor, but I do stay at a Holiday Inn Express from time to time... ;-)

Your trying out for the fire department?

I have known serveral people who had to get their knee scoped and it was never a big deal. Took a few weeks to get back to normal.

Also...sounds like you have done well, but many years after surgery, I find it valuable still to ice after running.

Yea I ice my knee after running every time. I guess after 8 years I guess it's to be expected for a "clean up"

Let us all know how it goes. I have wondered about having mine scoped myself...I have lost flexibility in the last few years and probably have some issues as well.

Its kinda throbbing right now after that cortizone shot...

I concur with Gunner's diagnosis. Sounds like a meniscus. A scope and trim and you'll be up and around quickly. The surgery's a snap, but it's the therapy that's the pain. (Just because of the inconvenience) My house is well-versed in this particular issue-6 surgeries in all, so I feel pretty confident identifying these symptoms!

Good Luck!

Yea he said my ACL graft was fine, just dread ANOTHER surgery, but he seemed to think it won't affect me longer than a couple of days unless theres an unknown tear.

I had surgery for a torn meniscus in December after putting it off for 1 1/2 years. It was a tough 3 weeks but has been improving ever since. Make sure you keep it iced and stay off it as much as possible the first couple of weeks. I tried to do too much too fast and had a lot of swelling.I suggest doing the bike at the gym and then move into walking on the treadmill.

I'm right there with you Rocket, I've had 4 knee surgeries and I swear they've destroyed me. I went from running and jumping through and around anything to "if I'm going to be applying for this job soon I really can't afford another knee injury" IT SUCKS!!!! I'd say just play it safe, lay low do what you've gotta do and then see what the doc says once you can let him have a look.

Yea its a crappy feeling worrying at age 28 if my knee is gonna hold up long enough to get me thru the academy so I don't wind up unemployeed cause I'll be leaving a better paying job to chase this dream. I'm in the best shape of my life and this happens, so mad about it.

Believe me I know, that's what kept me out of the Army, signed all of the papers to leave in the Spring of 04, then in January playing a pick up game basically for cardio tore my right ACL for the second time. Ever since then it just worries me.

Actually just got home from playing my first pretty active game in about 3-4 years. I have a feeling I'm going to sleep like a baby tonight, thank god it wasn't full court.:isurrender:
