After wishing cancer on someone? Hell no!

 

Hating gay people, which affects how a segment of the population is treated and how public policy is decided - not offensive, none of our business. Wishing someone cancer, which can't actually incur harm on anyone unless they are so mentally scarred from the "wish" - totally out of line. Good to know.

I may be the first one to use the word "condemn" but I don't think that I'm the only one that feels as though he should have chosen his words much more wisely.

But, RTS, this comment seems to condemn the person and not the comment.

Why would you be shocked that I condemn it? Do you find it any different than the opinion I had for those that wore shirts with a very disparaging word for Palin on it? If this were my favorite actor, musician or what have you, I would condemn it. If it were Johnny Depp, one of my favorite actors, saying he wished Obama would die screaming of rectal cancer, I'd start a similar thread condemning what he said.

 

I was shocked because you are such an outspoken opponent of the political correctness movement. I do remember the issue with those people wearing those horrible, horrible Palin t-shirts and was glad that we were both on the same page about those. I think that those were worse because I honestly feel like those people truly wished harm, physically and emotionally, to Palin. In this case, I honestly think that Penn was using hyperbole in his comments.

 

The bottom line for me is that I don't think that he should have used those stupid and insensitive words. However, I'm not going to blow the issue out of proportion.

You people just don't get it. It amazes me that this whole thing has gone totally over your heads. The guy is on a humanitarian trip. Some people question his motives (wrongly in my opinion) and how does this humanitarian handle it? By wishing death on them, "screaming from rectal cancer" (in his own words) to be exact. I ask you, what's humanitarian about that? Again I ask you, what's human about that?

Funny to me how the majority of you (people by the way that usually condemn such deplorable, hateful, ignoble behavior) are willing to act as if it's no big deal because hey, after all, he's just an actor.

Even funnier to me is how many of you want to try to spin it on to me because of PC. This is beyond PC folks, and for the record I think he has every right to say it. I never once said he had no right to speak his mind. My conscious, however, will not allow me to just give him a pass as you all want to do just because he has freedom of speech or you like his acting. I also have freedom of speech, I choose, in this case, to point out how vile, base and despicable it is to wish such an appalling thing on other human beings simply because they questioned his motives. This guy is no humanitarian.

No, that comment points out the facts, that his comment overshadowed what good he did. That's why I said he could have taken the high road and come out on top of this one. He chose to climb into the gutter.

Just because I'm outspoken about PC doesn't mean I have no heart or common sense. There's a line and he crossed it. He, and those that refuse to condemn his words, further prove that those that preach tolerance are the most intolerant people there are.

No one is blowing it out of proportion. Calling for a ban on his movies or something to that effect would be blowing it out of proportion. All I did is point out something hateful and said his words should be condemned, if that's blowing it out of proportion, we're in a world of hurt.

Amen. Completely blown out of proportion. I can't see why anyone would be this upset, flustered and traumatized by a silly remark from a hot-headed celebrity. The issue is why this is such a big deal and why has it been so blown out of proportion here. Obviously, it's a cop-out and a case of trying to get off the hook to keep asking people to agree with you while skirting the real issue. I didn't say you did. I'm comparing your defense of one statement that actually affects people (hating gay people) - in which you made sure to point out that everyone condemning the statement was an overly PC, liberal, nosy, sensitive type - to the trauma you've managed to experience over this "wish," which probably doesn't even have the power to alter its object's mood.
