March 9, 201016 yr Kentucky basketball, both men's and women's did well. Women's basketball and men's basketball swept Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. If Calipari wouldn't have gotten snubbed, we would be talking about a clean sweep.
March 10, 201016 yr Calipari didn't get snubbed. Stallings won the award and deservedly so. There is a much better chance that Stallings wins 27 games with Cal's players than there is that Cal finishes second in the SEC East with Stallings' players.

Besides, Stallings teams usually rely on a good dose of outside shooting. Kentucky certainly doesn't have the same type of shooters that Vanderbilt has.
March 10, 201016 yr Obviously I'm not alone in that theory because Stallings won COY. Just because you win the most games, doesnt mean you are the best coach. It means you have the most talent. Tubby Smith was a great coach when he had talent early in his UK tenure but suddenly couldn't coach at the end when the talent wasnt there. I really dont think he forgot how to coach in 10 years.

I believe recruiting is also a job of the coach. Calipari took a team of freshman and lost two single games, beat Stallings twice, and won the SEC. No you're not alone in the theory, but I'd venture to say that there are plenty of other people that see it the opposite way - maybe even more than those who see it your way considering there are articles all over the net, from national writers, asking how this could happen.
March 10, 201016 yr Very few outside of Kentucky. Which is to be expected. If recruiting was the job of the head coach, Tubby Smith would still be at UK. The assistants do the recruiting and the head coach comes in and closes the deal. It was the laziness of Hanson and Rigot that led to UK having subpar talent. And Tubby refused to get rid of them, which led to his downfall.

That's not the point he took a team that was in the NIT last year and has them as a one seed in the NCAAT. Plus, he is 2-0 against Stallings, I just don't see the logic in picking Coach Stallings.
March 10, 201016 yr Because he did more with less maybe? Stallings goes 14-2 in the SEC with UK's roster. So does half the league's coaches.
March 10, 201016 yr Joe Hall won a national title with a two-loss team in 1978 and shared the SEC COY with Ron Greene of Mississippi State Tubby Smith won the 1998 National title and shared the SEC COY with Nolan Richardson and Jerry Green. They look at more than wins and losses.

March 10, 201016 yr WOW, why didn't they just every coach in the SEC a share that year, there wasn't many left. When 25% of the coaches get a share of the award, it makes you wonder doesn't it.

Forgetting the argument about whether recruiting is part of coaching, I think Calipari did a marvelous job of taking a team that is overwhelmingly lead by freshmen and losing only two games. Heading into the season, all we heard was how UK was talented but too young, they were overrated to start the season and would likly lose several games...he deserves a lot of credit for that, IMO. Part of coaching is knowing when not to coach and turn your talent loose, letting them learn through game experience. I think you're downplaying the impact a head coach has in the recruiting process. I believe the laziness in recruiting you reference started at the top with Tubby. It's unfair to lay all the blame at the feet of Hanson and Rigot. Additionally, the style of play is a major factor. Tubby's style didn't draw recruits in, which only magnified the need that he and his staff work even harder to sell the program to recruits.

Tubby Smith was a great coach when he had talent early in his UK tenure but suddenly couldn't coach at the end when the talent wasnt there. I really dont think he forgot how to coach in 10 years. Tubby was tired and needed a change. Let's be honest here, there was more talent on his final team than the one he won the title with. Rondo, Morris, Crawford, Bradley, etc. Problem was that Rondo never bought into the system and Morris was just flat out lazy BUT they did have talent. I loved Tubby, but it was time for him to move on. Nobody since Joe Hall left has lasted 10 years at UK except Tubby. The job wears on you.
March 10, 201016 yr Congratulations to the UK players for winning the awards,IMO I think Coach Cal should have won the award for Coach of year, but thats just me. Congratulations to Coach Stallings.
March 10, 201016 yr I would have voted Bruce Pearl for coach of the year; to play as well as they have after losing their best player for the whole league schedule and still go 11-5 is much more impressive than the job Stallings did. Stalling did a good job, but considering the adversity Pearl overcame, it has to be him.
