2010 Scrimmages

Featured Replies

My understanding of the rule is that each team can scrimmage twice. The freshman 2, JV 2, and varsity 2. Also, if there are no umpires involved it is a practice not a scrimmage. The BW/HHS JV/frosh deal was a practice. There were no umpires and was on the football field.

With the limited space at BW due to construction/softball and other outside teams using HHS they got together to practice not scrimmage.

Funny how everyone is always up on exactly what Beechwood is doing.

I believe you may be wrong. A program scrimmage is a program scrimmage. A program consists of Frosh, JV and Varisity. All three may scrimmage on the same day, different fields but you cant break your scrimmages down in different days. If any of those teams participates in a scrimmage on different days then it counts as a program scrimmage. With that said it appears Beechwood has commited an infraction of the rules set forth by the KHSSA. Beechwood Varisity scrimmages HHS on one day and then Beechwood Frosh scrimmages Highlands on a different day. Then Beechwood Varsity goes and scrimmages Campbell Cty on a third day. That becomes 3 program scrimmages. Bottom line is when any one level of your program scrimmages it counts as an official scrimmage (umpires or not, baseball field or football field surface) doesnt matter. Rules are rules, lets respect the game. :thumb:

Doesn't your Freshman, JV and Varsity have to scrimmage at the same time and on the same day for it to be counted as 1 scrimmage. Rumor has it that Beechwoods Freshman/JV scrimmaged seperately from the Varsity's 2 scheduled scrimmages. If this happened, which could very well be a Rumor what the heck can happen to Beechwood's 2010 baseball season.:idunno:

And I guess if there is some problem it would also be a problem for the team they scrimmaged, right TBirds?

Something to chew on.

Bylaw 25. Limitation of Seasons

Sec. 1) General Provisions Concerning All Sports

e) Specific Penalties for Violations - Too Many Scrimmages

Any school violating scrimmage limitations may be placed on

probation, prohibited from participating in preseason scrimmages

in that sport for two (2) seasons, and may be prohibited from

taking part in KHSAA state championship competition or other

penalties in accordance with Bylaw 33. The second violation

shall result in automatic suspension.

Sec. 2) Sports Specific Limitations - Baseball - Boys

b) There shall be no more than two (2) scrimmages or practice

games prior to the first regular season contest of that year

Case BL-25-10- What is a scrimmage and what is the

purpose of allowing them in the preseason?

A scrimmage is a semi-organized opportunity to participate in a

sport in game conditions prior to the opening contest of the

season. Scrimmages are designed to be controlled opportunities

for participation NOT exhibition games. While many state

associations prohibit preseason competition between schools,

it is felt that this is the best means of acclimating to game

conditions and preparing for the season while ensuring

competitive fairness and equal participation opportunities.

What are the limitations on the allowable scrimmages?

1) Each school is limited to a total of two preseason scrimmages

of any type with players other than members of that school’s

squad against competitors not eligible to be on the team’s

eligibility list at all levels of play (grades 9-12) in each sport

.

2) Both scrimmages (or one if that is the school choice) shall be

held prior to the first contest in a sport.

3) The total elapsed time from the start of each scrimmage until

the end must be no longer than three consecutive hours (Start

to finish, including any breaks) and all competition activity

must held at the same site. This time limit is not playing time,

but elapsed time on the clock and starts when the first team

member at any level engages a person from another other team

in any manner. The basic restriction allows for participation in

any fashion with outside opponents for a single, continuous,

three hour period. It is possible that the varsity, junior varsity and

freshman teams could oppose each other in game simulation

settings and only be charged with one scrimmage if the TOTAL

amount of time scrimmaged for all team levels combined from

start to finish is less than three hours. The three hour time

measurement shall be suspended in the event that inclement

weather forces cancellation after a scrimmage has begun and

shall resume when warm-up activities resume following the

suspension

4) The limitation is for all levels of play (grades

9-12) at a school, not each level of play.

.

9) It is recommended that officials be utilized for all scrimmage

contests. If officials are utilized (other than coaches exercising

normal supervisory duties), they must be KHSAA licensed

officials.

And I guess if there is some problem it would also be a problem for the team they scrimmaged, right TBirds?

I dont think the Birds scrimmaged anyone else other than BW. Varsity scrimmaged one day and Frosh scrimmaged the next day. That counts as Highlands two program scrimmages. No more, no less. I hope this isnt going to be a problem for BW this yr because I know they are loaded and looking to return to post season play. :thumb:

I guess what post 33 says.:idunno: Doesnt look good though.::popcorn:

A three hour time limit on the entire scrimmage covering all teams? I have believe there are a lot of teams straying outside that one. It is hard to have a baseball scrimmage for three levels of baseball in a three hour time frame.

The penalties for a scrimmage violation is probation, loss of future scrimmages for two years, maybe some other minor stuff. Just read the handbook. Pretty simple.

Nothing will effect them this year. Not that it matters. Beechwood is that good. I guess my only beef is why their coach wouldn't know the rules, but then again, I'm sure he does. I guess he figured those weren't scrimmages. IDK!

All, without a doubt. Heck the Freshman scrimmage was at least 2 hours itself that day.

That's what I am saying. Have there been any scrimmages at any schools involving more than just varsity that lasted less than 3 hours? I would guess a lot of schools are having scrimmages that last more than 3 hours if they are scrimmaging varsity, JV and freshman. Baseball is a slow sport. I guess if you had a scrimmage and went maybe 3 innings varsity, 3 innings JV and 3 innings freshman you might have a chance of getting it in under 3 hours - but I wouldn't count on it even with those limits.

The years my son played, his team never had more than two scrimmages including all levels. Coaches knew what to schedule, I guess.

Well, where they played, never more than three hours. That's for sure. No lights on the field.

I guess your right!!!!:sssh:

Not sure what the issues are but HHS Beechwood only scrimmaged once......got to field and it rained out one day, played the next.

I agree it is a joke, can we see a setup for basketball here. A school with two gyms can play everyone from freshman to Sr. in a 3 hour basketball scrimmage. Such is life in KY.
