Bunning making friends among the unemployed

Featured Replies

Senator Bunning once cared about the unemployed. When the benefit was due to expire in November, he joined a unanimous vote to extend it until the end of February. “Kentucky has been hit hard by the current economic downturn,” he said at the time. It still is, but Mr. Bunning refused to consider the extension unless it was paid for with funds from the fiscal stimulus plan. For years, Mr. Bunning didn’t seem to have a problem with blowing up the deficit for the Iraq war and tax cuts. Now he’s a deficit hawk when it comes to average Americans.

Maybe he’s preoccupied. At one point during a debate on the issue Thursday night, he complained about missing the Kentucky-South Carolina basketball game.

That sorry so and so... and here I thought everything was GWB's fault...

It is amazing how the title of a newspaper story can tilt the story itself.

Read about this in two different newspapers and in both as well as this thread title, they make Bunning sound horrible.

And what did he do, ask for the Democrats to PAY FOR the bill they were passing. He even presented a plan that would PAY FOR what they were asking.

How novel an idea.

Congress actually PAYING FOR something before they allocate the money to it.

And for him expecting that the Senate PAY FOR something instead of just adding to the deficit and eventually the debt, he will be hailed as a horrible person.

He wanted the benefits to continue.

Just wanted them PAID FOR instead adding more to the deficit.

It was the Democrats and the other Republicans who did not want to PAY FOR the benefits.

Like finding a way to pay for it has stopped him on votes before. Give me a break.

Not saying it hasn't. But on this issue, what is wrong with finally seeing the light and asking for them to pay for it. Like I said, he even gave a plan, don't know what it was admittingly, that the Democrats rejected.

They wouldn't pay for them anyway... we do.

His plan was to use the unspent stimulus money.

Good point but instead of borrowing to pay for them, he wanted it paid by reduction in other programs.

It was the way it was done in the 90's with Clinton/Newt at the helm and worked well to get the deficit down to a surplus.

Everyone wants to give so much credit to Clinton for the surplus but forget it was the Newt pay-as-you-go approach that kept spending in line.

And then the Republicans got elected in all 3 places and lost their minds, deserving to be beaten in 2006 and 2008.

His plan was to use the unspent stimulus money.
Two-thirds of which has yet to be allocated or made available for actually STIMULATING the economy... which causes one to wonder legitimately, if not for actual STIMULUS when it's most needed then what?

Most likely for bringing home a bunch of PORK for home districts to help get Dem congressmen reelected after they pass the turkey health care bill.

Ahhhhhhhh... I see....

Good point!

I remember hearing this on the 5 o clock news the other day... "unemployment may be cut off because of one person..." Yikes, hate to be his secretary.

To further show how out of touch he is he actually complained about having to debate the issue and miss the Kentucky vs South Carolina game. I'm sure the laid off worker who is worried about paying the electric bill this month really sympathizes. :puke:

I'm with him on this one. Cut somewhere else to pay for them and go ahead and continue the benefits.
