Basketball programs that suffer due to Football program success.

Featured Replies

This seems to be a popular topic in another thread so I thought I would start one specifically on the topic.

Some things to think about here because I dont want to sound like I dont revel in the success of a school's football program. However, is the season too long which causes it to run into hoops season? How much of an effect does this have on the basketball program as a whole if your football teams makes the state playoffs and is good enough to play for the state championship in mid December.

Highlands is a school that pretty much gets reservations for a deep playoff run yearly. Because they have a mix of athletes playing both sports, how much has this affected their program as a whole.

Do other schools have an advantage?

Maybe this is oversimplification, but I would guess that small schools that have traditional football success would suffer in basketball, at least in the early part of basketball season.

I agree, the Class A schools mostly but Highlands does not have a huge enrollment and there are not a ton of boys who only play one sport. This may not be such a problem at a St. X, Trinity, Boone Co, Ryle or Simon Kenton.

While NewCath isn't in the same category with Highlands, they seem to handle it ok. I definitely think the smaller the school, the tougher it is to do.

I think in general it is much harder to be elite in the big three ( Football, Basketball and Baseball) today, because of all of the "off Season" conflicts that mult-sport athletes deal with. 30 years ago, AAU bball was a shell of what it is now, and off season workouts for Football were not nearly as time consuming or intense as they are now.

If you look around the state there are very few programs that can be considered elite in both Football and Basketball. Some are in baseball and Football, some are in Basketball and baseball. I am sure someone will name a few who have had several good runs in both, but over the long haul I don't know any I would consider "elite" in both.

Before it is ask I define Elite in football as winning State titels or at least making it to the final four. In BBall an Baseball I consider winning the Region elite.

Highlands only had one football player, that was slated as being a contibutor this season. Tyler Grubbs. I'm not sure his playing football into December really affected the Basketball program. This football thing is simply a crutch. Highlands has had plenty of success on the hardwood, to now blame football as to why they're are not as successful.

Grote joined the football team and broke his back in a scrimmage and was never the same.

Im not talking about contributors on the Varsity squad because I already stated that they had an abnormal amount of Sr's and Jr's who were strictly basketball this season.

I am saying the overall program and getting better.

Football success at Highlands entails the players committing to that program 9/12 months a year. Weights, Spring football, Summer conditioning, 2 week dead period, Football til December 12th.

Where can they work on their Hoops game? Thats all I am saying.

Tell me where maybe a Drake Bruns/Carter New/Patrick Towles or Jake True played any substantial amount of basketball during this time.

Bardstown traditionally struggles in December because most of the same kids who play hoops also play football.

Except for the Lorenzen and Smith era, football players were not the core of the basketball program.

This has less to do with football. Basketball is simply too long. It's the longest season of all sports in KY.

Football and baseball are generally 5 months long but basketball is 6 months. Ohio gets started around the 1st week of November and usually finishes one week earlier than Kentucky.

Football may be a bit longer than that now but you can't start games earlier than they do because of the heat index.

How does this not have anything to do with Football when teams that make the State Playoffs are playing into December. You just stated the season starts November 1st. This atleast 30-40 days where a potential contributor to the basketball teamd doesnt even pick up a ball. It generally takes them a few weeks to get into basketball shape. If you have injuries due to football then you have to deal with those, case in point Highlands.

Football doesnt have anything to do with a program that ends their season on Oct 31st maybe or doesnt implore kids to work on football 9 months out of the year.

6 teams play football in December. If basketball would start the first week of November they could start games the Monday after the state championship, like baseball does with the basketball tournament.

Then, there are only 6 teams that don't have football kids practicing basketball a week before their season starts.

I've argued this for years and people simply say cut basketball season down.......and they are wrong.

Basketball you need to have a feel for and you have to play a lot of games to get that feel.......you also have to have conditioning for, basketball season is fine the way its is.

College basketball teams play 35-40 games if they win the title.

College football teams play 15 games.

Holmes played 38 last year

All the football schools played 15.

Looks fine to me.

So you don't have to be in any type of physical condition to play football or baseball? God knows baseball doesn't have anything to do with feel.

Comparing high school sports to college? What does that prove?
