Past District Tournament Stories

Memories and thoughts from past District games that stand out?

I think the greatest district game/situation ever played was Pendleton County and Brossart in 2005! The regional championship was decided in Brooksville that year in the first round of the district. All fans stood in line for hours with some still having to stand in the endzone when inside the gym for lack of seats. Heard of people offerring 50 dollars to take peoples place further up the line and arguements coming from that. That building shook at times that night it was just so loud in there. How many times will we ever see shuttle buses running in Brooksville, KY on top of that?

A very good Holmes team getting upset by Beechwood in the districts I believe in the 70s. I know there are Tiger followers on here that remember the team and the year.

What about 1986 Rex Chapman's senior year. Apollo falls to Owensboro in the semifinals in a heartbreaker. Bringing an end to Chapman's career in the district when they had gone to the state the previous year. Memory little fuzzy but I believe Owensboro made it to the state that year. So like the 2005 38th district tournament the 3rd decided their regional champion in the first round of the district. I know people from all over the state drove to Owensboro to see this game.

1982- Bellevue defeated NCC and sent them home.

Jimmy Maher/Doug Schulte and company in a packed house down at Newport.

Newport had a very good team that year and ended up winning the District.

1987 38th District semifinal Bracken Co. and Deming. Bracken Co. wins on a questionable tip in at the buzzer. Being very big rivals this turns into a heated situation, were the principals almost get into a fight. Both schools agree not to play the previous year. So the rematch is the 1988 District title game Deming gets their revenge by beating Bracken Co. by 15 points. Boy I loved the old 38th had many good games and great rivals.

O'boro got to the state semifinals that year, where they fell by two to eventual champ Pulaski Co.

Rex had 32 of his team's 50 points, and Owensboro won it on a shot by Orlando Stewart with 5 seconds left.

King Rex or not, when the rest of your team manages 14 less points than your star, you probably have an issue on your hands.

2004 38th District

Bracken Co 31, Brossart 30

I believe it was in 1968 with Larry Miller and company!

If memory serves me, I believe it was 1996 or 97, Walton-Verona's first year in the 32nd district. Bearcats playing against a very good Owen County squad down at Scott County. Rebels up by I think 20-something midway through the 4th quarter. Out of desperation, Walton starts to press, and Owen County experiences a complete mental meltdown. Bearcats end up winning, and moving onto their first 8th region tournament.

Oh yeah, and if that wasn't good enough, Walton's starting point guard, Jimmy Shields (I believe) broke a finger on his shooting hand during the game. Came out, got it taped up, and came back in! (He didn't play the rest of the postseason though, as the hand was then in a cast.)
