It was 7-7 after 1st qtr and 20-10 after 2nd, so 3 points.

Got there with CCH up 28-23 in the third quarter and it was a great game from there. Indians got as close as two at 36-34 but Thelen responded with an "And one" at the other end to seal the deal for the Colonels.

 

Great atmosphere for a game but free throw shooting was horrible for both teams.

 

BTW, I didn't realize how big Burger was until I saw him next to Thelen tonight. I'd say he's in the 6'2-6'3 range. Nice size guard. Should be a lot of fun to watch this kid over the next 2 years.

..........Trevor Wellbock (four points) made up for a lack of scoring by pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds. Alex Connelly (six points) had five assists for the Colonels.

 

Jake Burger, one of nine sophomores on a team with just one senior, led Holy Cross with 11 points. His basket with 1:24 to play made it a 2-point game, but Connelly and Wellbrock combined to hit four straight foul shots to give the Colonels a 40-34 lead.

Having been involved with the Indians program for the last four years, I can honestly say last night was the most disappointing loss for me. I am extremely proud of the way our young men competed last night. At first, when we were down 20-10 at the half, I had a "here we go again" moment, but looking at the stat sheet, we only had 3 turnovers and went 3-19 from the field. If we hit shots in the second half, we had a chance and we did hit some shots.

 

Someone at the scorer's table made a comment to me pointing to the stat sheet, "That has to be the worst your team shot all year (26%)," which is not true. Off the top of my head, I believe we shot 8-44 against Bryan Station in the Lloyd Tournament. Our team struggled from the field all year (37%). Yes, we only had one senior this year and Marcus (Lea) can be proud that he was the only one from his class to stick with it all four years.

 

The young guys have to make a commitment to come back a year better not just a year older for the program to get better in the coming years. As I said, I am extremely proud of this group and would not trade them for anything.

 

Good luck to the Colonels on Friday and in the 9th Region Tournament, it should be a good one.

And, HC did not score their first points until (from memory here) 3:52 left in the 1st on 2 FTs by Burger, I believe.

I have watched CCH 4 or 5 times this year but last night was the first time I got to a game very early. Can someone please tell me why a team that is as bad from the charity line as Cov Cath is does not shoot free throws before the game? Neither team did for that matter and they were both horrible from the line. I saw CCH practice a few dunks and countless three pointers though. I guess those are the crowd pleasers.

Agreed. I've seen kids do it individually but never a team do it as a team. I'd also argue that if you're going to do that you should only have 5 to 7 kids max shooting. Otherwise, your shooters aren't getting many reps before the game starts.

At the end of the 1st half, Coach Goetz was giving the ref an earfull immediately prior to going into the locker room. As Coach walked toward and through the tunnel he became angrier. I heard shouting at the top of the locker room stairs. Does anyone know what was up?

I can tell you that at 4:45pm on Wednesday Wellbrock, Thelen, and Evans were shooting FT's and didn't stop until around 5pm.

They do this and work on defensive drills instead of lay up lines.
