All "A" State Tournament To Remain In Richmond

Featured Replies

On Sunday Stan Steidel, Chairperson of the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic, announced the organization is renewing their contract with the City of Richmond and Eastern Kentucky University.

As suspected the All "A" organization and the City of Richmond have agreed on keeping the tournament in Richmond. Their previous contract was up for renewal this year, and the committee considered Corbin and Frankfort as potential future sites.

The City of Richmond and Eastern Kentucky University had announced earlier this year that due to budget constraints and the fact that they were losing money on the tounament, they might not seek to renew their agreement with the All "A".

The length of the contract was not disclosed in the press release.

I think this is good news. Now if they could just get some decent lights in McBrayer.

This is excellent news! I really enjoyed the three days I got to spend there this week.

I'm told that Frankfort, Corbin and Pikeville made offers. Corbin and Pikeville were dismissed for location and/or lack of hotel rooms. Frankfort's offer drew serious consideration.

I believe the agreement with Richmond runs for three years, through 2013.

Where would they have played in Frankfort? The Civic Center?

If McBrayer's lights are worse than those at the FCC, they may as well all be night games. Outside.

Yeah, the Civic Center has hosted it in the past, if I'm not mistaken. The lighting there is a million times better than McBrayer. Used to be every time I went to Richmond and spent more than a day at the All A, by the time I got home I would come down with a cold or some other malady, as the greenish-orange glow the lights cast over me apparently softened up my immune system.

I caught bronchitis two years ago down there. I thought I was going to die.

Frankfort has never hosted the All A Classic ... it was played in Memorial Coliseum in Lexington in 1990-92, but Rick Pitino didn't like the tournament cutting into his practice and instructional time. It's been in Richmond ever since.

I remember when it was at Memorial. For some reason I thought it was in Frankfort for a couple years in between Richmond and Memorial.

I think that if it does ever move to Frankfort that it would make for a very exciting environment given the seating capacity at Farnham.

Frankfort would have made a nice venue, and it would have been convenient for the teams with the two adjoining hotels.

Glad it's staying in Richmond.

So are Richmond's hotels and restaurants ...

It actually had a one year run at Rupp between being at Memorial and EKU.

It has never been in Frankfort, althought the girls KHSAA Sweet Sixteen was held there some years ago.

Actually, the Rupp was just a one-day thing. The boys' first round was played there in 1993, but the rest of the tournament was in Richmond.
