However his play for the whole game, should have never even put him in that position to mess up if it wasn't for all his teammates mistakes with the fumbles. I mean if was Favre for the only reason why they even still had a chance to win after having all those fumbles. Yes it is partly Favre's fault for the loss, however there also is a lot of other guys that the loss should fall on.

I'd give the Vikings defense just as much credit as Favre for keeping them in that game. They stifled the Saints offense in the second half. And, when your own offense continues to give the ball to a team as explosive as New Orleans, you're margin of defeat is typically going to be closer to 30 than 3. But, you're right. Favre played well and was a huge reason they had a chance to win that game. Considering the beating he took, I thought it was one of his most impressive performances until that last interception. The problem is that a mistake of that caliber wipes out anything good you did over the first 59 and a half minutes. I wouldn't cut any QB slack for making a decision like that, including Favre.

Longwell career stats: 50+ 61% 40-49 74% 30-39 88% So at 50+ you are choosing just a little better than a coin toss to decide whether you get to the Super Bowl. And that doesn't even factor in the pressure of the kick. As we saw in this year's playoffs, the stats are probably even worse for kickers at playoff time. I am just absolutely amazed that any coach would stop trying to get closer than a 50+ yard field goal try in any game, let alone with a trip to the Super Bowl ride on those odds.

I am just absolutely amazed that any coach would stop trying to get closer than a 50+ yard field goal try in any game, let alone with a trip to the Super Bowl ride on those odds. I agree with you there. I think it was a huge mistake to go conservative at that point. I'm simply looking at the situation Favre faced on third down following the penalty. He could have got to the 35 with a run at least, which would have been a 52 yarder. A gimme? Not by any means. But, with little time left what is the better option... A. Throw an off-balance pass across your body to the middle of the field. I'm guessing that the odds of completing that pass are less than a coin toss. B. Take the yards, and give Longwell (who as you noted is better than 50% from that range) a shot to win the game, with OT being the worst case scenario. The Vikings beat themselves across the board in that game. The TO's loom largest, particularly the final interception, but they made other mistake as well...like going conservative at the end. :thumb:
