I always thought Shagari should have got to play more. He definitely should have been playing over Orbzut. When he did get to play some in I believe his sophomore year, he did pretty well. I remember when he was in the game against UNC he did a real good job on Sean May, and did a very good job on Bogut too when they played Utah.

I'm sure TENS of people were thrilled.

I'll put it this way. If any of us were Jared's size, we'd probably be getting paid to play ball somewhere. As much as I am happy for him and Gari', for playing professional ball and representing the University of Kentucky, I also sit back and look at the facts. Carter did not even start for his Scott County High School team his senior year, and he barely got into any games during his four year career at Kentucky. A four year period in which Kentucky was arguably at about the worst it had been in a while. However, he still is playing professional ball? Again, don't hate, because I am thrilled he is getting a chance to make a living doing what he loves, and something we would all love to do. But what kind of credibility does this league have when you have guys on your pro roster who did not even start on their high school squad, and barely sniffed the floor on their D-1 college team? Same for Alleyne who didn't get too many minutes while wearing blue, but then went on to do alright for Manhattan I guess. Either way it basically all boils down to being over seven foot. If I were Carter's size, I would more than likely be in the league banging with the likes of Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol. It's true you can't teach seven foot, but its also true that you can't teach some seven footers how to be good basketball players.

I agree with you on all points. I have been VERY critical of Carter (mainly the fact that he ever recieved a scholarship) but I'm glad to see that both men are continuing their basketball careers.

 

On a sidenote, I'm not for sure if Shagari ever recieved his degree. I know he didn't finish it during his playing career at UK.

Shagari transferred to Manhattan, so I'm sure he didn't get his degree from Kentucky. He may or may not have gotten it from Manhattan. I know he always had some academic issues (mainly attendance, from what I recall). But, who could blame him. Shagari is about a foot taller than me and I had problems sitting in those desks. I can't imagine what it'd be like for him.

I never could understand anyone making an argument like this. Did I get a scholarship to play for UK? Am I 7 feet tall? I don't pretend to be a basketball player, but I'm smart enough to recognize an apple win I see it, and I'm also smart enough to recognize a horrible basketball player when I see one. In this case, I see two 7 foot terds.
