9th Region Pitching

He's going to have to have a greatly improved senior season if he's to fall into Isler's category, who was absolutely dominant all season long. Coming off shoulder surgery is going to make that an even tougher challenge.

I agree with you Coop Roenker's unless he improves a lot, isn't in the same class as Isler. Ice was indeed dominat all season long and he threw against the best the Commonwealth had to offer and still won and won and won.

Huge, huge difference between getting a D1 scholarship and hoping to be a walk on!

Indeed, Isler pitched great his senior year and also had (the luxury of Maile as his catcher) and a CovCath team that was probably the best in the last decade to come through here to support him. That is no knock on Isler, he's definately a top notch pitcher but at the same time I like to look at what other pitchers could do if they wore a different uniform. An example from last year was Hammons from Ludlow. Put him on the mound with last year's CCH team and I think he would've been considered a stud and received alot more attention than he did.

With that being said, I don't think the talent gap between Roenker and Isler is as big as you stated. Roenker hasn't even thrown his senior year yet. The surgery is a definate question and we'll have to see how that shakes out but if he comes back 100%, he'll be interesting to watch.

The one problem with your logic is that Ice didn't give up many hits or runs. Even if CCH's offense was only average he still would have won most if not all of his games.

Using "wins" to measure a pitcher is a mistake. You have to look at how they actually throw? Do you think X or UC offered because of his W/L record?

Absolutely not. I was replying to TOG's quote that he won and won and won. I agree with you 100% on wins/losses.

Again I'll repeat this is no way trying to diminish past accomplishments by Isler, it's just that I respect Roenker's pitching ability and if it's true that he is going to walk on at UC, he is walking away from other college offers to do so.

And btw, your team's defensive ability absolutely effects a pitcher's hits/ERA. When you have a catcher who can throw out runners and players in the field who can make tough plays to get you out of an inning, they are worth their weight in gold to a pitcher.

Why does a UC pitcher have to be compared to Isler? I'm sure that they have some pitchers on their staff who weren't the same caliber as him when they were freshman.

Agreed.

Who's in the rotation for the likes of Bellevue, Ludlow and Newport this season?

Not to make this a CCH thread but Isler didn't play on the greatest team of the last decade. 2002 won state, 2005 was one strike from winning semi state and 2001 may have been the most talented team ever at CCH.

Isler is not in the class of Etler or Harmon but he was very, very good. Certainly, he's better than Roenker at this point of their career. Roenker would have to improve greatly to be considered as dominant as Isler was.

The CCH history is irrelevant to the point.

I think you are dead on on all points.

As do I.

Roenker is a very nice pitcher, no question. I hope he has a great senior year and hope he walks on at UC (or wherever he so desires). But he's not shown himself to be at Isler's level yet. Maybe he will. But given the manner in which Isler pitched last season - one absolutely lights out game after the next against the toughest competition CCH faced last year - Roenker has quite a ways to go even begin to be realistically compared to him.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's the beauty of BGP. Let's see if we can get back to the original thread of this year's 9th region pitching. It's only a few weeks away.
