Ballard 60 Holmes 52

Is it possible that Pittman reached over and touched the ball?

That could have been the case but the way the Holmes' bench and coaches responded to the call, I'm not sure it went that way. The play happened near midcourt right in front of the Holmes coaches and players. It was hard to get a glimpse of what truly happened (from the opposite side of the court) because of the set that Ballard lined up in for the out of bounds play.

They may have called a violation and then a tech on Pittman. After the call was made Pittman did indeed put his arms out and say something but I don't know if that was before or after the tech had been called. Again, it was hard to see with the players standing around the play.

There was a minute or two of confusion before the ref sent the Ballard player to the line. Half the gym didn't know a tech was called until they saw Jones walking to the line to shoot the free throws.

From some of the sources I know that talked to Pittman, he explained that when the Ballard player slapped the ball to put it in play the ball popped out of the Ballard's hand and Pittman thought it was in play by then so he went to touch it.

Depends on where the ball is. If it crossed the line its in play. If its still on the other side of the line it can't be touched by the defender.

Understandable. He just thought it was in play maybe because he thought it crossed the line. Interesting call by the ref. It was hard to see whether Pittman reached over the line or not.
