December 14, 200916 yr BJ Penn looked the best I've ever seen him. That was an amazing effort by him. Penn is awesome. Complete domination, that cut Sanchez had was nasty! Yes, and yes. Coming into the fight I was thinking in my head that Diego had a decent chance at BJ. I was thinking his rabid style may overwhelm BJ eventually and that he may clip him with a good strike. However, this wasn't the case as Penn owned him the whole night. Diego had been on a roll lately and had been looking very impressive, and thats just saying something about BJ and how he amazingly just keeps getting better each time he goes through camp to get ready for fights. I don't know what Diego was thinking trying so many takedowns. He never hardly even got both legs to try a double leg, and it was obvious the single leg just wasn't happening. Not really sure why that became his game plan because with BJ's jui-jitsu and ground game I feel that would have not been the smartest thing to do in getting him in that kind of position. I was thinking he should have fought about the exact same as he did against Guida, and that is just coming out 100 miles per hour and start swinging for the fences and hope he lands one before BJ lands the finisher on him. I was really almost shocked that Diego fought the way he did instead of trying to be the aggressor and do the same thing he did against Guida. Penn's all around game was so much better I have no idea why he would try to match his grapple, takedown game. I guess he may have learned his lesson now though. So now this leaves the question, whats next for BJ. Unless Dana and Joe Silva can bring in somebody from outside the organization to challenge him, there will really be no competition for him at all unless he moves up. Guida lost to Florian, so Florian would now be the clear number two, but we all saw how well he faired a couple months ago, and it wasn't that good. You may could have a fight between Florian and Sanchez to see who would get a rematch, but unless something drastic happens and one gets a touch of luck it isn't going to work for them. I would love to see him move up and take on GSP again, or maybe even do it at a catch weight. With all the injuries right now this could be about the only huge fight that the UFC could put together. I would love to see this happen because Penn is much more improved and on a whole another level since the first matchup. And IMO has looked a lot better at the end of the year than he did in January for the second fight. Third time may be a charm for BJ. Would love to see it happen.
December 14, 200916 yr I was very impressed with Mir. He says he wants to get to the point where he has to cut 15 pounds to get to 265. If he doesn't lose any cardio, I think he can give Lesnar a run for his money next time out. It would definately be an interesting fight to watch. BJ Penn is a complete madman. He's the Anderson Silva of the Lightweight division, nobody is even close to him.
December 14, 200916 yr Lesnar took a few good shots from Mir when they were standing in their last fight. If Mir can keep Lesnar on his feet he might be able to beat him in their next fight. It will be interesting to see though (if we ever see it). He did. He rocked Brock...that's the only time I can recall Lesnar looking like he was hurt from strikes. Unfortunately for Mir, his biggest shot was the flying knee that resulted in Lesnar falling on top of him...and that's a bad place to be. I'd definitely favor Brock in a third fight, but... 1. Mir is the only guy who has a win against Lesnar. 2. He's the only guy who has rocked Lesnar with strikes. It would be a mistake to count him out. Also, if Brock has been as sick as reported, it doesn't seem likely he'll be at his peak in the near future. If they fight soon, that could be another advantage for Mir, especially if he can take keep the fight standing and take it into the championship rounds. Could be interesting... These guys might end up fighting each other 4 or 5 times.
December 14, 200916 yr Question: If GSP wasn't in the WW division, would/could BJ dominate that class as well? Or, even if he wasn't "dominant", would be the top guy, i.e., the champion?

I hear what everyone is saying about Mir having a chance at Lesnar. I remember Lesnar getting shook up a bit with the punch then the flying knee.....but I just think he'll continue to use his enormous size to his advantage. Mir looked good bigger, but Lesnar is a freakin' monster. Bottom line, I really don't like Frank Mir, regardless of Lesnar's post-fight antics, I was glad to see Mir get dominated by Lesnar the way he did. I just don't like him.....I do NOT question his ability, which is superb, I just don't like him. Later.
December 14, 200916 yr Author ^ I don't like him either, but he has solidified himself as the #2 Heavyweight for now.

But, coming off a mystery illness creates some doubt about what kind of shape he'll be in. And, Mir is the only guy who has had success against him. I'm back-and-forth on Mir. I kinda like him, but sometimes he can be irritating. He's a talented and skilled fighter though, IMO. Excellent ground game, especially in the HW division. And, his striking is solid as well and continues to improve it seems. To be honest, Mir is a guy that I would love to see in the cage with Fedor. Again, I wouldn't pick him to win, but I think his chances are as good as anybody. He's one of the few fighters who wouldn't be facing an astronomical disadvantage on the ground with Fedor. The problem with that fight is that I'm not sure it would ever make it to the ground short of Fedor dropping him with a big right.
December 14, 200916 yr ^ I don't like him either, but he has solidified himself as the #2 Heavyweight for now. But how? By beating Kongo? By that rationale, Kongo was the #2. Mir has an arrogance about him......an arrogance in which I get the impression that the UFC owes him a trilogy match with Lesnar. The UFC has no legitimate ranking system, that I know of. If Carwin was getting a shot at the title with Lesnar wouldn't that imply that Carwin was the number one contender? I'm not saying that Mir can't beat Carwin or Velasquez....but lets have him fight Carwin......and go from there. Later.

Just by how he has been the only one really to compete with Lesnar and how he has looked in other fights. He knocked out Big Nog too.

I'm not saying that Mir can't beat Carwin or Velasquez....but lets have him fight Carwin......and go from there. Later. Cain Velasquez has a lot of potential. He just needs to work on his stand up. Mir is the number two, IMO, because he beat Nog, Kongo and Lesnar all recently. Everyone talks as if Lesnar is the clear cut number one, well the results say that Mir beat him once and Lesnar beat him once. So a tie-breaker is in order. Now that being said, Lesnar looks to be much better fighter now then he was when Mir beat him. However, who knows how Lesnar recovers, if he even does recover. I'm just saying, as of now Mir and Lesnar are 1 and 1 against one another. I think Strikeforce has a few heavyweights that would come into the UFC and contend right away.
December 14, 200916 yr If Mir bulks up to around 280 like he wants and has to cut to get to 265, it would be interesting to see how the extra strength plays out against Brock. I still don't think he can beat a healthy Brock, but that's definatley a fight I would pay to watch.
December 14, 200916 yr Opinions are what drive the UFC, but they still don't have a legitimate ranking system. I hear everything that you guys are saying, and I agree with it, to a point. But the number one contendership shouldn't be decided by Mir fighting Kongo, or Mir's last fight with Lesnar. If Lesnar's next fight (to defend his title) was with Carwin, wouldn't that imply that Carwin is the number one contender? So, shouldn't Mir have to fight Carwin? It's this way across the UFC. White always comes out and says, if "so and so" beats "so and so", I think he deserves a shot at the title.....but it's not always the same if the reverse happens. Joe Silva is the matchmaker, but Dana White is the hype maker. If Mir does bulk up and have to cut, I really would be interested in seeing the fight....I'm interested anyhow because I love to watch the fights. However, I wonder what that added weight will do to Mir....he's certainly not used to being that big, while Lesnar has been that way for many years and it's very evident that he knows how to use it. Later.

If Brock is unable to fight than Mir should have to fight Carwin in my opinion. Either way, I don't think Mir deserves the fight at this point.
