I agree with most things Stoops.

 

I think he has hit the end of the road in Norman, but I don't know how well he would be accepted in Notre Dame. Not because his ability or recruiting. I think he could recruit and win there, but Bob Stoops is a southern guy, and Notre Dame is a northern Catholic school. It just doesn't seem like a good fit. It would seem more like a Rich Rod at Michigan, which doesn't look like it's working too well.

Considering he was an assistant at Florida, and then HC at Oklahoma for a decade, I just assumed he wasn't southern.

 

Perhaps he would fit in better than I thought... Still not the traditional Yankee, I personally don't think.

Pete Sampson is reporting this on Irish Illustrated and he is VERY tuned in to what goes on at ND...

My father knows a couple of people in Oklahoma that are big around there.

 

Apparently, if anything is happening, it's under tight, tight wraps. The administration and boosters are all being told Stoops is turning down the ND offer.

 

It could be true, or it could be a smokescreen by the Oklahoma folks.

I just can't believe Stoops is the first choice. He's not a bad candidate IMO, but I think they should at least make an effort to see everyone who could potentially be interested. If ND screws this up, I think they may never recover. ND is losing it's luster IMO, and another bad coaching regime only puts them further off the national map.

I think Stoops is a good coach. Oklahoma was down big time before he got there, and he took them to the National Title in a couple of years. He has since taken them to three other title games, but hasn't fared as well. He would be a top candidate if I had to choose. I think most ND fans would choose him because of his history. ND fans want them to look around more instead of settling on Kelly, which some believe they'll do. And there are rumors that Kelly would crawl to ND. I don't know how true those are, gt would know more, but that's just what is going around.

Urban was groomed at ND, coaching under Lou Holtz. Holtz is a mentor to Urban, and helped him before Urban's first title at UF and probably last year as well.

 

Urban is a Catholic from the Mid-West, has called ND his dream job on numerous occasions, and in his book said that his time in South Bend was some of the best years of his life. He said last winter that he feels that ND is a place that he would like to retire, though he has backed off of those statements somewhat.

 

His wife plays a huge part in his coaching decisions, but she agreed to what he calls his "Veto" right, meaning that she cannot tell him to turn down ND, OSU or Michigan if he wants to go. Shelley Meyer is very found of UF and Gainesville and has stated that she doesn't want to leave. But, if Urban truly wants the ND job she will go.

 

According to Urban he took the job at UF in part because of his children still being in school. ND requires National Recruiting, where as UF can mainly stay in state and still have amazing talent.

 

I can't imagine Urban leaving, but if ND plays it's cards right I don't imagine that he wouldn't listen either. Ego may also play in to it. No one thought Urban's offense would work in the SEC (which I thought was ridiculous and remember telling one of my HS coaches to just wait and see), and many don't feel that you can win big at ND any more. Maybe it's enough? I think it may look a little more tempting if UF loses this weekend. Saban is catch UF, and if the Gators don't get them this year it may be a few years before they are ready to dethrone them IMO.

Over Meyer? He said what he said, but it's not like he had any choice. What is any coach going to say in that situation? Stoops has lied, but everyone gives that a pass.

 

I think Stoops is a great coach and would/will do great at ND. I just think that you have to try the impossible sometimes. Try for Meyer, try for Gruden, heck dig up Bear Bryant and beg him if need be.

 

ND needs a home run, Stoops can be that, but I just can't see him as the first option. Maybe ND has put out some feelers to others, I don't know.

I agree. I think that they would have a good shot at BK, but I just hate to call anything a done deal.
