Jesus/Water which one Forgives Sins?

Featured Replies

Due to my Radio Bible show this is heard almost every day. The preachers say that the Water/Baptism saves the sinner. They use several verses on the subject mostly found in Acts 2:38/chapter 10:48/19:5/.

I counter this with each verse here also says IN THE NAME OF JESUS, and I brought up the Angel telling Joseph to name the baby Jesus because he will save his people from their sins, he didn't say name H2O.

Jesus.

Matthew 3:11 - "I baptize you with water for repentance". Did John already repent or was he about to?

I think that the water baptism, in the name of the Lord Jesus (Acts 19:1-7) is kind of like a rite of passage.....almost an initiation. It seems that it's mostly done by new believers, but anyone can be baptised again as a renewal of their faith.

Ananias told Paul to "be baptized and wash your sins away" in Acts 22:16; in Acts 2:38, Peter associated baptism with forgiveness.

With all that said, a water baptism does NOT get one into heaven; it is our faith, belief, and obedience in Christ Jesus that does that.

Later.

Only Jesus' blood washes away our sins.

We are called to be submissive to what Jesus wants to do in our life.

And one of those first acts is baptism.

Jesus called us to baptize and be baptized.

If we refuse, than have we really let Jesus be the Lord and Savior of our life.

It is one of the first acts that shows that Jesus is the Lord and Savior of our life.

Bill, I agree with the bolded BUT, if we refuse to be baptized by saying we don't need to, are we truly obedient to Christ Jesus since it is clear in the Bible that we are to get baptized.

No, we are not truly obedient to Christ Jesus should we refuse to be baptized....if someone on their deathbed, never having the opportunity to be baptized, gives their heart to Jesus.....will they still get into heaven?

If a believer refuses baptism, he/she really should look into their own conviction and rethink what they feel it means to be a Christian, a follower of Christ.

Jesus had himself Baptized, was it so he could forgive himself, or to show us its for all believers?

James 2:19-20, Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the Devils also believe and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Vs. 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

Vs. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified and not by faith only.

According to this it shows how faith and works go hand in hand. Baptism would be viewed as a work according to this conversation which means that by baptism a man is justified and not by only having faith.

Shops, thanks for your insight, welcome to the site hope to see more of your comments.

In the Old Testament God had men bring things to him for the sins forgiveness, now we have Jesus and Jesus tells us to Baptize in his name but not to forgive our sins, when you do see this in scripture its always with the NAME of Jesus.

I was raised that the blood of Jesus saved us. Our baptism is just a step in our faith and belief to show that we are born again.

DA, when do you make the contact of the blood of Jesus? Belief/repentance/Confession....That is a question I hear a lot and I'm not pointing you out, its what comes up in the debate. I also agree with you.

What can wash away my sins?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Lets say the blood of Jesus is a cloud separating us from heaven. When I ask the Lord to forgive me of my sins my prayer goes through that cloud and my past is cleansed. Then I am born again. That is how I explained it to my child when she was 15.

That's a good explanation.
