James 2:19-20, Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the Devils also believe and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Vs. 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

Vs. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified and not by faith only.

 

According to this it shows how faith and works go hand in hand. Baptism would be viewed as a work according to this conversation which means that by baptism a man is justified and not by only having faith.

I have a real hard time reading and understanding King James with all the st's on the end of words and thou's and suchsts.

19 Do I hear you professing to believe in the one and only God, but then observe you complacently sitting back as if you had done something wonderful? That's just great. Demons do that, but what good does it do them? 20 Use your heads! Do you suppose for a minute that you can cut faith and works in two and not end up with a corpse on your hands?

22 Isn't it obvious that faith and works are yoked partners, that faith expresses itself in works? That the works are "works of faith"?

24 Is it not evident that a person is made right with God not by a barren faith but by faith fruitful in works?

House, great verse, but look right before that 16th verse and you will see Jeus talking about being "born of the water."

Don't forget about the gift of the Holy Spirit also.

I see baptism only as a show of faith. I don't think it does anything for you, I woud just think that it is a way to proclaim your faith. JMO.

I agree CC, the water isn't magical. No way can it itself forgive our sins. Jesus died on the Cross for our sins and there is no way anyone can convince me any different. I believe that every Christian would get Baptized as Jesus commanded and thats important. Thats what the Baptist use to put you on their Roll. Mark 16:16

It is interesting that in Acts 2 when asked, "What shall we do?", Peter responds by saying, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

 

In Acts 16, when asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?", Paul replies only with belief, when he says, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved..."

 

Peter seems to link them together, while Paul doesn't. It does go on to say that they were baptized in Acts 16, but nowhere in that passage is it explicitly stated as being necessary for salvation.

 

I left out the rest of Paul's response because that can be a whole 'nother discussion.

5, In Acts 2:38 its in the Name Of Jesus where the forgiveness of sins comes in and also in Acts washing away the sins was done by Calling on the name of the LORD.
