I have to disagree with this one. This is JV ball and it was their last JV game. Heard there was even some regular JV kids that didn't get into the game. I know I will get attacked for these comments, but that is my belief.

Some of these boys very well may be better than some of the JV players, but please, give me a break. Tell me one player that was deserving of playing in that game today as a freshman. There isn't one. And nobody can argue otherwise. Well I guess people will argue, but it won't hold water. None of this they put their time in. Nope! They didn't practice with each other all year. Don't give me the experience factor either. What would that be for, to play in JV next year. Again, please!

There might be one player that will have an immediate impact on Varsity next year, and that's a maybe because it's so hard to do and that's McCoy.

So with that, I say bring it on!:madman:

Agree 110%

McCoy was needed at QB... but I left scratching my head... when the Frosh entered before the contest was decided. :ohbrother:

JV is about development. I'd hate to be the JV coach who ran off a late-blooming player all in the name of "winning." JV is about getting boys ready for varsity games. Period.

To each there own... IMO if you haven't made it by now will you ever? You play to win and bring along those with POTENTIAL. Period.:thumb:

tdyballgame=voice of reason :thumb: Couldn't agree with you more. Freshman have no business playing in JV games unless they are needed due to injury or they have played JV and not Frosh all year. As impressed as I am with Dale and the results he has on the field this I don't get. :idunno:

I am just curious is this your opinion or something that has been written into the rulebooks that I dont know about?

While I will agree that JV is for development I am not buying it here and especially at Highlands. It is my opinion that the coaches formulate a gameplan each and every week with the intent to win the game. It isnt designed to make sure everybody gets in the game. Development of a player doesnt just take place within a 2 hr game on Saturday morning. It happens during the countless hrs they practice throughout the spring/summer/fall. You have to develop during those hours and show the coaches you deserve to be on the field. Maybe the coaches felt like these players deserved to be on the field for some reason. Obviously it was either because they felt they gave them a better chance to win the game or because they want to develop them faster than the kids that didnt play.

Tough to take if you are a parent of a kid who doesnt play, I get that and it stinks. However, these are things parents have no control over and that frustrate the heck out of them.

This sounds like a very good high scoring affair, can anyone give us details on some of the top players and scoring plays? I would like to hear about the game.

Absolutely disagree. Plenty of Jrs at HHS haved played at the JV level to succeed quite nicely as seniors on the varsity level. Do you think all of the seniors on the 08 team were playing varsity as JRs on the 07 team? And how many standout seniors on the 07 team honed their skills at the JV level the year before? Now if you have a frosh good enough to play JV over upperclassmen then fine, that starts at the beginning of the year, not the end. You start stepping frosh over Jrs and sophs at the end of the year, you will lose #s in those classes. If this is true this seems to be a new precedent at HHS. Hope not..

Do you really think they will lose kids from the program? A program that basically dominates the entire school. My son's class is already experiencing the loss of solid athletes from other sports because they want to focus on football. I honestly cant think of any players who stopped playing after their sophomore/JR year because of any of this type of stuff. Last season didnt they bring up Jake True/Carter New/Austin Sheehan to play some JV and didnt they play before some of the current JR's/Sr's of this year?

Chris Carson had a nice kick return for a touchdown. Jake True and Cory Compton ran the ball really well. #6 (sorry I don't know the name) had some outstanding downfield blocks, one to spring the runner for a touchdown. Compton was all over the field on defense. The freshman QB had some nice downfield throws considering the weather but just couldn't hook up with his receivers. Carter New seemed to be everywhere. Wish I could give you more details but it was a whirlwind game, as evidenced by the score. Turn around and you missed a big play.

Absolutely correct about the above. Problem is that the Freshman don't practice with the JV or Varsity. Now this week, some of the Freshman will be given the chance to move to Varsity to dress throughout the playoffs. Funny thing is that you won't find them practicing with the Varsity or even JV. They will be by themselves. Hmmmm!

Unless something changes, then development with JV and Varsity practice is put on hold till next year. Which really makes sense since there are too many kids to deal with. That is where it's hard to figure how it translates to JV time but hey what do I know!

Yes, I dont understand why they separate the Freshman from the JV/Varsity in practice, especially if they are using them in JV games and for mop up play in Varsity blowouts. Unless there are some really small Frosh players that are given the opportunity to dress JV/Varsity and they dont want to get them hurt. I dont see a problem with them practicing with the Sophs but putting a Colin Seidle (frog) in a hamburger drill with Brandon Roller might be a little too much. :scared:

You can't think of anyone because it hasn't happened much. I don't know much about frosh from last year. If these kids were playing over upperclassmen, then why aren't they playing varsity this year? Even if you don't lose kids, and yes you will, there may be animosity between the classes. Something that never bodes well. Dale has succeeded by keeping classes in order. These championship teams are senior led teams with jrs and a couple of sophs contributing each year. Why mess with success??

Josh Quillen is the only soph this year who has earned a starting Varsity position on Defense and I believe was moved up last year.

I still stand behind my take that coaches are not out there to make every kid happy or parents happy. If a JV game score is out of hand then they will probably put in the kids they want to see who dont normally get a chance to play a lot. If the game is close like yesterday they are going to play kids that they want to develop and give them the best chance to win. If its a kid who is a year younger than another kid then I dont think they worry too much about it. If you are a JR and on the JV squad and they put a Frosh in before that kid then IMO that JR player hasnt developed yet and the coaches see more upside at this time in the Frosh player. Harsh reality but it happens and it builds character. Maybe it will make that JR player go out and work his butt off on the offseason and come back his SR year and show that they can be a major contributor and earn playing time. Or maybe it makes them angry and they choose to quit the team and if that is the case then probably not one that I would encourage but its their choice.

Drake Bruns is another sophmore that is doing a great job at the varsity level.

I agree with the work harder get better mentality. What class you are in does not translate into guaranteed playing time. :thumb:

Yes but DRake wasnt on the Highlands frosh last year so I didnt mention him. If he was on Highlands frosh last year he most definitely would have been moved up and probably played before someone on JV last year.

:thumb: Got it.

Congrats to Ryle on winning at the JV and frosh levels this year vs. the Birds. Now, keep working hard to make it happen at the varsity level next year.

If I remember correctly in 2005 Highlands had at least 5 or 6 freshman that played reserve for most of the season. They also played frosh ball every week. Josh Conner would carry the ball 20 times on Thursday night and 20 more times on Saturday.
