I've never really understood why people get so upset when the Yankees continually have a huge payroll. It's even more hilarious when these same people are Red Sox fans.

For most fans, it comes under the heading of "lack of a level playing field." But it is hypocritical for BoSox fans to whine about it.

Exactly. The Yankees overspend and outbid for some free agents each year and pay the penalty (luxury tax) for doing so. It is the system in place.

 

Teams in how they spent money and their rankings: NY (1), Boston (4), Detroit (5), LA Angels (6), Philly (7), LA Dodgers (9), Atlanta (11), St. Louis (13), Colorado (18), Minnesota (24).

 

It is hard to say baseball has figured it out when 8 out of the 10 teams that have either clinched or the only ones left with a shot to make the playoffs are in the upper half of teams spending money. People can bash the Yankees for not winning titles, but the proof shows your odds are a lot better to win it all if you are willing to spend money.

I have a hard time buying this argument since the Yanks haven't been to the World Series since '03.

Few reasons but the most important to answer the thread title question:

 

They have won more titles and victories than anyone else in MLB, and it is not even close. It is easy to dislike favorites.

I think this is a cop out excuse and the real reason is what bugatti alludes too. People are jealous of their success. Check this out:

 

Here are the World Series participants and their payroll rank since '01 (the first year the Yanks went over $100 million).

 

2009: Yanks (1) vs. Phillies (7)

2008: Phillies (12) vs. Rays (29)

2007: Red Sox (2) vs. Rockies (25)

2006: Cardinals (11) vs. Tigers (14)

2005: White Sox (13) vs. Astros (12)

2004: Red Sox (2) vs. Cardinals (9)

2003: Marlins (25) vs. Yankees (1)

2002: Angels (15) vs. Giants (10)

2001: Diamondbacks (8) vs. Yankees (1)

 

Out of 18 years half the World Series participants weren't in the top ten in pay roll. It seems like teams who aren't the big spenders have a chance. And three teams 25th or lower made the World Series as well.

Look at the salaries though. After the top nine teams this year (it was ten last year) nobody spent $100 million dollars. So I'd say using the top ten as your big spenders is a much better qualifier than the top fifteen.
