Most media outlets lean towards the left. MSNBC leans toward the left heavily. Fox leans towards the right heavily.

No they do not. That was an attack started by republicans with no real basis in fact. I do not consider MSNBC a news organization either, although IF we had it in Frankfort I would watch it, but CNN, CNBC, ABC, CBS are news. FOX and Friends in the Morning may be the worst of all of the shows b/c they claim to be news, but Steve, Gretchen and Brian and anything but fair and balanced.

 

I can't stand to watch them.

When Tom Brokaw had a problem with the NBC coverage during the campaign and Chris Matthews says it his responsibility to make sure that Obama is successful and then NBC promotes him as the face of their news, they lost credibility with me as a news organization.

 

CBS I never watch.

 

I like Morning Joe, Bill Hemmer on Fox and CNN has begin to grow on me as they have begun to hold Obama accountable for what he is doing or not doing instead of giving him free reign and taking the position that he is wonderful and great.

Oblermann/Matthews/Hannity/O'Reilly are not in the news delivery business. They are there to give opinions/interview people who give opinions.

 

So, in my mind, you can distinguish between the network news organizations and the cable channels opinion shows.

I watch MSNBC and Fox News. When I evaluate the two channels and whatever "bias" they may have, you have to separate the regular news coverage during the day from the lineup of commentary programming at night.

 

No argument that Fox, for most of the night from the time Glenn Beck's show takes the air, leans to the right. Bill O'Reilly has some moderate views, but he takes on the "left-wing media" constantly because they have called him out on some things he's said in the past. Sean Hannity ... no freakin' doubt where he is, and Greta Van Susteren leans more in that direction all the time.

 

MSNBC, especially with Schultz, Olbermann and Maddow, leans left ... no question about it.

 

It's the news coverage in the morning and afternoon hours that sets them apart. MSNBC does a good job of trying to cover things from the middle.

 

"Morning Joe" is very balanced, with Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan on the right, Harold Ford Jr. as a middle-lefty and Mika Brzezinski appearing to lean left, plus Mike Barnicle is an experienced reporter and columnist.

 

The new show that follows "Morning Joe" is called "Morning Meeting" and is hosted by a guy named Dylan Ratigan that leans left but usually fosters some pretty good discussion of issues.

 

Fox, however, makes no bones about leaning to the right. Brit Hume's show (the reporting portion) is fine, but his discussion panel at the end clearly leans right.

 

"Fox and Friends" in the morning is unabashedly right, plus they may have two of the biggest imbeciles on TV in Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade as regulars. Gretchen Carlson gives off the impression that she just repeats the talking points issued to her. The show is a total farce.

 

Even the midday coverage leaves something to be desired. More than once on Fox, I've seen a news anchor (not a commentator) chide a guest for using the "Democratic talking points." Linda Vester did this during the 2004 campaign with a Kerry supporter, but I can't remember who the other one was.

 

Last year, several other anchors seemed to take great pride at taking shots at the Obama campaign on a regular basis last year. Some of the Megan Kelly-Bill Burton brouhahas (still on YouTube) are classic examples.

 

Fox can claim otherwise all they want, but they clearly promoted the "Tea Parties" and the "9/12 March" ... all of which betrays their sympathies.

 

There are some notable exceptions. Shepard Smith has really grown on me over the years, and Bill Hemmer has moments where he deviates from the party line.
