Sorry about that my mistake. What I don't understand is how NewCath is even in the top 10 with a record of 3-5?

New Cath is in the top 10 in every poll so a lot of people who know football seem to think they are a top 10 team, as well as the computers.

I hope your team has a great year. And does well in the playoffs.

I spent many many years in the Army. So I know where your coming from. Sergeant J. I am or was E-7 (SFC). Good to always meet a vet brother.

GO ARMY

Thanks to you too. And I won't hold it against you for being in the Army. I don't have a team. My coaching days are over. The kids are out of school now. I just like to watch well coached young men learn and grow. I go to the game that looks like the best match up. That the good thing about NKY. So many teams. And since this about 2A thats why I say look out for NCC. Yes they are 3 & 5. I remember 3 years ago when they went into the playoffs at 5 & 5 and came home a state champ. They play a lot good big schools. Come playoff time they are ready. Oh yea, Good Luck to your team!!! :ylsuper:

So should NewCath be higher than Corbin or P'burg with the schedule they have?

NCC's losses are to:

5A Dixie

6A Simon Kenton

6A Ryle

6A Campbell County

5A CovCath

So IMO yes, NCC should be higher than those two schools.

Should losses on a strong schedule count TOWARDS a team's high placement on a rankings list?

I'm not saying that NCC won't be fine come playoff time (I think they'll do better than their current record alludes to), and that they're not playing tough teams (it's evident that they are), but a loss is a loss regardless who it was against.

Just my two lincolns.

No, a loss isn't a loss, regardless of who it's against.

Losses to tough teams, especially if the losing team is competitive with them for a portion of the game, mean much more than losses to mediocre or worse competition.

I don't think so because they didn't beat any of those good big schools. There are a lot of teams that can lose all those games so losing against those big schools doesn't prove much. They played them tough but no wins so I wouldn't put them above Corbin and Prestonsburg. If NCC had beaten even one of those teams they lost to, then I would have to rethink it.

See, I think a loss is a loss. I think that while NCC has played some tough teams, they still lost to them. There isn't an asterisk by the number in the loss columns pointing our eyes towards the small print at the bottom of the column saying that those losses were tough teams and that they played them well. It's a loss. We'll agree to disagree on this one.

A couple of examples of why you should agree with me:

In 2006, Newport Catholic was 2-5 at one time, losing to Belfry, Ryle, Covington Catholic, Covington Holy Cross and Beechwood. The 'Breds then reeled off eight straight wins, avenging the losses to Holy Cross and Beechwood and beating Danville to win the Class A state title.

It wasn't like their losses were to so-so teams. Belfry had been in the Class 2A finals in 2004 and 2005 (and made the state finals again in 2007) ... that year, they lost to Russell in the semifinals. Covington Catholic won the 3A state title. Ryle made it to the championship game in 4A. Beechwood may very well had been the #2 or #3 team in Class A.

I'm not saying that NewCath's losses this year are to the same quality of competition, but they have come to quality teams. Four of their five losses have been to teams that are ranked in the BGP poll in either 5A or 6A or was at one time this season.

Mayfield was 2-5 at one point in 2001 and fell out of the AP's top 10 for the first time in something like 20 years ... two of the losses were to strong out-of-state teams and the other three were to tough teams from Paducah Tilghman, Hopkinsville and Marshall County.

Hopkinsville reached the 3A state semifinals, losing 28-21 when Boyle County ran a fumble back 90-plus yards for a touchdown, and the Indiana team that beat Mayfield (Evansville Mater Dei) was a defending state champion and was beaten in the state finals.

Mayfield ended up going to the state semifinals, and led eventual state champion Danville 10-7 after three quarters, finally losing 17-10 on a last-minute touchdown.

The moral of the story is this. Competitive losses to good teams, esepcially those from higher classifications, aren't just run-of-the-mill losses. They sometimes mean that there's a team there ready to bust out when they start playing teams in the same class.

^I understand all that, I really do....but does losing to a strong schedule make a team higher ranked than a team that beats a mediocre schedule?

I totally agree with the rankings....but how do you think they should be? Who should NCC be ranked ABOVE because of their schedule versus the schedule of the five teams ranked above them.

This isn't thankfully college football where the ratings mean something. You have to play the games so why worry about it. Ratings don't mean squat.

I'm not saying that NewCath should be rated higher than #6 ... that's pretty close to where I would put them. I might go to #5, but I doubt I would go higher than that.

My argument on NewCath is that they clearly belong in the top 10 ahead of a lot of schools with flashy records against much weaker competition.

Very true.
