BTW, Adam real talent is on the hump pitching. He will be a force to be reckon with this spring! Baseball is he game, football is something he does.

I have only seen CCH play twice, versus Ryle and Beechwood. From what I recall, Connaughton started on o-line and Shumate started on defense. At the Ryle game, in fact, I sat near Shumate's former coach with the Spartans and noticed his name was called all night because his former coach commented on what a special player he was. In fact, I think he had a sack of Ryle's QB at one point in the game. Didn't notice his name at the Beechwood game, but I was on the Beechwood side and couldn't hear the announcer. Because Connaughton is on the o-line, I wouldn't expect to hear his name. Find it hard to believe those two aren't playing much varsity, but I guess you would know better than me......

 

As pointed out by another, you may have the wrong Connaughton. The senior ( # 67) starts at left O tackle. The sophomore ( #65) I believe only plays D line. I'll look at the tape again, but I want to recall the sophomore played a fair amount against Highlands. It was certainly more than a play or two.

OOPS....Sorry, my mistake (kind of embarrassing, actually).... so are there two Shumates as well?

Just for clarification, there are two Connaughtons playing on the Cov Cath offensive line. Kevin Connaughton, who is referenced in the article you posted a link to, is a senior. His younger brother Tim is a sophomore, and is the one who was playing in both the varsity and JV Highlands games. Tim is also very promising, so because of the comparatively little amount of playing time he gets at the varsity level, the play him in the JV game as well.

 

Yes, Adam Shumate, a junior, gets more playing time than some players (take Tim Connaughton for example), but still less than most of the starters. He is a "key player" so Cov Cath has been, and is continuing to play him at the JV level to develop him into the leader and standout player that they want him to be as a senior. I take it from everyone's comments that the method seems to be working.

 

While I don't know the reasons I do know that Adam has not played hardly at all other than late-game 2nd team situations for the last 4 or 5 weeks.

As for Shumate, sorry for questioning it, but I do find it hard to believe that, as you say, CCH doesn't play him on varsity any more, based on what I saw in the Ryle and Beechwood games, based on what I've heard of him from others (some of them CCH parents), and based on what Shumate's Spartans' coach said about him to me and others at the Ryle game. Why did the Enquirer list him as a "player to watch"? Also, I checked your roster on your website, and Shumate is listed as a 6'4", 190 lb. linebacker/tight end. In another thread, you said CCH was struggling on defense. If he isn't playing, as you say, why doesn't CCH have room for a 6'4", 190 lb. player at linebacker? Sorry for my skepticism, it just doesn't add up.

The CCH website lists the email addresses of all faculty including the head football coach. We're not privvy to day-to-day goings on so only he can tell you. I'll defer to him.

He hasn't played more than a few snaps a game and on special teams for the varsity since about week 3 or 4.

You ask this question as if you have a problem with him playing in a varsity game and then turning around and playing in a JV game. I believe he is a junior and if the coach wants him to get more experience he will have him suit up for JV also. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Usually starters are not going to play in JV due to risk of injury, however for many it is a great way to get game experience for those that play varsity but may want to get alittle more game action in their practice. Shumate is a fine player and all the game experience he gets is just going to make him better.

I guess you threw me off when you asked if I was still sticking to my story. I usually use that line on my son when I'm seriously doubting his story.
