Can't say I'm not disappointed in this but if Brooks feels Fidler just isn't the best option then it is what it is. I don't see any reason for Fidler to stick around next year though if he wants to play at all.

I had been told that his first year or two he was more interested in other things. After the success he had in the spring I thought maybe he was finally headed in the right direction.

Saw Brooks saying last night (Lexington TV) that by virtue of experience, Fidler SHOULD be ahead of Newton in terms of knowing the system, etc.

 

I thought the "SHOULD" was telling.

As this saga unfolds, it tells me more about Fidler than Newton.

 

Here's the impression I get (and it could be totally wrong)...

 

Brooks still doesn't feel like Newton is ready and he'd prefer not to play him and burn the redshirt. However, Fidler is just not a viable option. He doesn't feel like they have a chance to compete with Fidler under center and he's being forced to go with the freshman. Putting Newton in as the starter is the only move he can make...he has to give this team it's best chance to compete. It wouldn't be fair to players on this team to play a bad QB just to save a redshirt. And, I think if that's obvious in practice, it would affect the rest of the team's performance because it would basically be saying that they're throwing in the towel on this season. I think what he sees in Fidler is forcing his hand.

 

What I've guessed from all this is that Will Fidler can't do the job.

I think Will Fidler is an easy going, laid back kid. I do not understand the coaches thinking he does not have good command of the offense. He out performed all quarterbacks in spring practice and the spring game.

 

He had a right shoulder surgery in his time at UK. He hasn't played and that gets tough after being in the program for four years. Practice does get monotonous and maybe he has lost some of the focus he needs to look good in practice each day.

 

I sympathize for how he must feel now. But this is the cold, hard, real world of big time SEC football.

I think your conclusion is very sound and logical.

 

I have a strong opinion that in the present tense, Will Fidler, in the pro-style offense the UK coaches are unwilling to change, gives UK a better shot to win than the freshman, Morgan Newton. I think the Wildcat nation will soon see why I feel that way.

 

If you factor in the future of the program's growth, I understand the coach's decision to go with Morgan Newton.

 

Either way, even though the coaches will not admit it, Randall Cobb will take more and more snaps, especially in critical SEC contests. He is the rescue man.

 

From Joker Phillip's viewpoint, as you prepare to take over this football program in the not too distant future, would you rather have a freshman quarterback gaining experience, or a redshirt junior quarterback who possibly will not have any eligibility at the time you take over the program?

I heard this afternoon that Fidler hurt his shoulder in practice and wouldn't be able to play regardless. Don't know if that is true or not. Is is common to let the QB take shots in practice?
