I would say you're wrong on several fronts.

Granted, we're probably not going to get a response from a member of the Rules Committee, but all of our officials are NFHS certified. If you'll notice from the title of the thread, this is a place to question officials. Please allow one of the officials to respond to the question instead of jumping to make petty quips and jabs.

It wasn't the last play of the game so how can you possibly make the statement that the outcome would of been different. If Dixie is better than CCH then that will be determined in the playoffs. Get over the play and send good vibes to your team for a successful playoff run.

I am an official and I am not attempting to make petty quips and jabs. Just thought the Billy Madison quote fit the bill and would maybe lighten the mood a bit.....tough room though?

 

As for replaying a quarter in football (if that is what I am reading correctly).....I just can't see that happening. I can't even see the possibililty of having instant replay in high school football. The technology is not available at a reasonable cost for high schools to afford.

 

I don't know how you can remedy the problem of a missed or incorrect call in the game? We just have have to work harder to get the plays right! I do know that myself and an extremely large majority of officials that I know want to make every call correct. However, we are all human and make mistakes....and we learn from them. I seriously doubt that any crew that goes out to work a game leaves the locker room with the idea that they are going out with intentions to screw anybody.

 

As for making a "sticky" for questions for officials....I like it! I pay and get on here quite a bit in hopes there is a rules question to answer. It will only make me a better official by doing so! It will also make fans and coaches better aware of the rules. If more people were more knowledgeable about the high school rules....I would hear, "but he is out of the pocket" a lot less often.

I'm glad to see you lighted up your tune. I think the biggest problem i have with the call is this. It's not that the ref threw the flag, was it an iffy call maybe maybe not. The problem comes that if your going to throw that flag you better know how to apply the penalty the correct way. Not one ref on the field stepped up to make sure tha penalty was applied correctly. That's the thing that's most disappointing. Wrongfully taking that TD off the board had a big impact on the kids minds.

I think the Dixie parents have moved on at this point and are hoping for a rematch!

 

Seriously, how should the penalty been applied - is the play called back as if it never happened or is it assessed on the next play. Is it a different scenario when it's a live ball TD?

In the Cov Cath Dixie game, a ref thru a flag because he ran into a camera man on Dixie's sideline. Dixie scored on the play - live ball TD. The ref called the play back because the Dixie sideline had already had an issue earlier in the game.

 

Found out the ref was suspended - should have assessed the penalty on the PAT and the TD should have counted which would have resulted in a win for Dixie.

 

The call effected the outcome of the game and determined where and who Dixie and Cov Cath played in the playoffs. Instead of the home game that Cov Cath now gets to look forward to, Dixie has a 3 hour ride to Ashland. DIXIE SHOULD HAVE HAD THE HOME GAME AND THE EASIER OPPONENT!

 

Why is their no ability to replay a quarter in football, or do an over time like replay, like you can replay an inning for baseball if the ref makes a call that effects the game outcome?

Maybe CovCath does not attemps a field goal in the 3rd quarter, gets a first down and score a TD. Dixie did not stop CovCath's QB in 2nd half and he avg better than 6 yards.Noone knows for sure how that game ends.

As for the call, Dixie had been warned all night about the sidelines.

The ref's before the game told both teams that the sideline rule will be enforced, and before the season they went to all schools.

I was also told by a person who I trust want he tells me, that a couple a plays before this play the ref did run into a player on the sidelines.

Watched the game last night on TV and Dixie not only had players outside the box, had players on the field.The ref threw the flag at Dixie's 35 before the play was complete, so how is that different than holding during a play.

You only know that dixie players were out of the box because of the camera's. In the excitement of the game the players move up, I'm pretty sure that goes for both sides. My point about the Cov Cath coaches was to demonstrate that the 2 refs didn't quite call the sideline violation the same way. Only dixie recieved the warning while Cov Cath recieved none.

 

I was told that the officials applied the penalty wrong and i believe that's what ended up causing them to be suspended for this week.

Even if the flag is thrown, the yardage should be enforced on the succeeding play because it is a NON PLAYER foul. TD should stand. The official and every member of that crew was wrong. I dont think Dixie was robbed of a win, just robbed of a TD and 28-20 lead and momentum.
