ColonelMike Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Congrats to Henry County on a great defensive game. North coach Billy Martin was concerned about the Wildcats' big play ability, and Henry got three big plays that staked them to a big halftime lead... Second Henry possession...Jacorri Baldwin takes a bubble screen and goes 40 yards for the score with 5:52 to play in the first. 7-0 Henry. On their next possession, Henry starts at their own 12, but a 75 yard dash around the right end by Lance Timberlake puts Henry in the North red zone. Moments later, with 1:18 to play in the first quarter, Luke Magness runs it in from the three. 14-0 Henry. Late, late in the first half, North dominating the second period and driving...first and goal on the Henry three. False start penalty moves the ball back to the Henry 8. PLAY OF THE GAME: Two plays later, it's third down, and Austin Peterson is picked off in the end zone. Henry gets into hurry-up mode, and Baldwin scores on a 53 yard dash up the middle with 1:40 to play in the half. Inexplicably, Henry goes for two - and fails - but they lead, 20-0 at the break. The Wildcats - mainly, the Wildcats' defense - dominate the second half, holding North to just two second-half first downs. Henry manages a final score with 5:41 to play in the 3Q on an Erick Butler 2-yard run. Magness runs in the 2-point conversion for a 28-0 lead. North gets their lone score early in the fourth; Jarrett Link takes it over from the one, but the extra point is blocked. Final: Henry County 28, North Oldham 6 Very impressed with the Henry defense. The battle between the North rushing game (top 5 in 3A) and the Henry run defense (top 5 in 3A) went to Henry, as North was held to (unofficially) 128 yards rushing, or 155 yards below their average of 183 per game. The Wildcats had four sacks, took the ball away three times (one pick and two fumble recoveries), and had 17 tackles for loss (all unofficial numbers). Next week: Henry County (1-0 district) vs. Western Hills (1-0 district) North Oldham (0-1 district) vs. Spencer County (0-1 district) in Goshen
oldonetechnique Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Spoke to someone at the game said that if not for qb scrambles and one big run, North may have been close to 0 yds rushing???
ColonelMike Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Spoke to someone at the game said that if not for qb scrambles and one big run, North may have been close to 0 yds rushing??? Not accurate, although if you weren't keeping stats, that would be the overall impression you'd probably have been left with. North QB Austin Peterson had runs of 22, 25, and 31 yards, and finished with a team-best 55 yards (unofficially) on 10 carries. But Zach Price had a 25 yard run, Austin Crawley had runs of 10 and 9 yards, Jarrett Link had an 8 yard run, etc. North finished (again, unofficially), with 128 yards rushing on 42 carries.
oldonetechnique Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 How about the d-end from Henry seen on another board he was on fire tonight? Doll?

North gave a great effort. Time to move on to Spencer.
ColonelMike Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 How about the d-end from Henry seen on another board he was on fire tonight? Doll? Very impressed with Dylan Doll; he was around the ball all night. But the entire Henry defense was flying to the ball and doing a tremendous job of plugging holes and shutting off the corners. North's bread and butter is its running game, and most of their rushing totals came from Peterson running for his life. About the only thing Henry did wrong all night was a very questionable decision to go for two on the final TD of the first half, with Henry leading, 20-0. It was probably an automatic call, based on what North set up in, but it didn't seem to make much sense on a night when the wind, rain, and mud combined to cause a total of 5 turnovers and when the potential for a sudden and dramatic North comeback existed in the second half... But all in all, Henry County was very impressive tonight. Congrats to Coach Engstrand and his crew! For the Mustangs - regroup and get ready for Spencer next week! Win the next two and you're still staying home during the first round of the playoffs!!!
BigCatDaddy Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Didn't get to see the entire game (man can only take so much water in his shoes), but it seemed that HC had North off balance on both sides all night. Great job by HC in getting the kids ready to play in deplorable conditions. Any stats for the entire game for both teams Mike?
True blue (and gold) Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 I was really wrong on this one and am not afraid to say so. Congrats to the Wildcats!
jvdfc Posted October 10, 2009 Author Posted October 10, 2009 Looks like Coach Ledford had the Henry Co. Defense ready. :ylsuper: Congrats again to the Wildcats. :thumb:
DYLANDOLL Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 One of the big changes defensivley was luke magness at d-end. He followed the motion man all night and did a great job on cotainment as well. The entire team played a great game.
ColonelMike Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Didn't get to see the entire game (man can only take so much water in his shoes), but it seemed that HC had North off balance on both sides all night. Great job by HC in getting the kids ready to play in deplorable conditions. Any stats for the entire game for both teams Mike? Unfortunately, no. Normally, I keep stats for one team and my color commentator keeps stats for the other, but my normal color commentator couldn't be there, and my sub - who is an excellent announcer - isn't so good with the stats. So all I wound up with was North stats and some select Henry stats. First downs: Henry 10, North 9 Turnovers: Henry 2, North 3 I know Magness had a very good night throwing the ball, despite the conditions; Mitchell was open all night on a little curl pattern he ran over the middle as North tried to stop the Wildcats from going over the top for the big play... I'm fairly certain Baldwin eclipsed the 100 yard mark rushing... For North, Peterson was 5-13-1 for 77 yards passing. North rushing: Peterson 10-55, Price 17-38, Austin Crawley 6-28, Link 8-5, and Evans 1-2 North was certainly hurt by having about 10 kids out, but they are deeper than most 3A teams (over 70 kids on the roster!), so I thought they'd be able to ride that out better...Henry has about half the number of kids on the roster. I know leading rusher Zach Price, who came into the game with over 500 yards rushing, was limited by the flu all week in practice and #2 rusher and primary receiver Jakob Manor was out with an injury. But I really don't think it would have mattered last night; last night, Henry was simply the better team. The differences between the two teams may not be quite as big as the score indicates, but Henry was the aggressor all night and impressed me on a number of fronts. The defense, in particular, is every bit as good as advertised. After watching this Wildcat squad play so well in horrid conditions, I'm convinced that right now they are the team to beat in the district... although the four teams are so close as to make no game result a major upset.

I was a little shocked that Coach E made the move to put the QB at LB this week (he is aweful valuable on O), but he was the difference compared to last week's defensive effort (as well as the Doll kid)...good call on that one coach e-gotta do what you gotta do come districts!
DYLANDOLL Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 (edited) Sorry about putting Luke in the wrong position. These new defences keep me kinda confused. Edited October 11, 2009 by Ram Rule 13
oldonetechnique Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Lets not forget this same defense has been ABUSED two times this year, I think consistency is the key if they are going to compete with Spencer and Western Hills who will bring bigger talent that North to the table.
