The Garrard County Golden Lions will make the forty mile trek south on U.S. 27 Friday night to meet up with the Somerset Briar Jumpers. Both teams are 2-0 in district play and the winner of this matchup will likely be the district champion, gaining home-field advantage throughout the entire 3A playoffs. After four straight close ballgames (in which they went 2-2), Garrard County picked up an easy 56-24 victory over Jackson County last weekend. Somerset has shot out to a fantastic start and currently sit at 7-0 and are ranked in the top four of most polls.

 

On offense Garrard County has began to hit their stride in recent weeks and are averaging 30.3 points per game. Somerset is averaging 39.9 points per game on the season and have scored over 60 points in both of their district wins.

 

On defense the Golden Lions are allowing 29.3 points per game, a number that is improving but will likely need to be lower to defeat Somerset. The Jumpers are allowing 14.1 points per contest and have only allowed over 20 points twice.

 

Garrard County and Somerset do not have a long tradition on the gridiron, having only played seven times. The rivalry was renewed in 2007 with Somerset moving up and into the Golden Lions 3A district. Garrard has never defeated Somerset in football, failing in all seven previous meetings.

I think Somerset will be the favorite. This is basically for the lead in the race for a district title. Somerset has been there before, ... for Garrard it has been a while. I hope that Coach Scenters and his Golden Lions pull the upset in this one.

If Garrard could knock off Somerset and go on to win the district it would be their third district title in school history (1967 and 1993).
