One of the greatest high school football games I've ever seen

Holding Hladon to 4/22 is something to hang your hat on. I'm pretty sure he ended up going to the Ivy League to play football. Princeton maybe.

Dayton/Bellevue Oct-2007 at Davis Field.

Lone Oak vs. Lexington Catholic 9/11/09. Seriously the knights were down 22 in the 4th and came back to tie it. The crowd and atmosphere were awesome.......

Is the Independent writing about this old classic this week because the circumstances surrounding this Friday's game at Putnam are very similar? Although there are no playoff implications, Ironton comes into Ashland as a heavy favorite much as Covington Catholic did. I hope the Tomcats can make this Friday's game another classic.

I actually didn't mean for this thread to be about great games that others have seen. It was supposed to be about the Ashland-Cov. Catholic game in 1988. I was hoping there were others who had memories of this game.

Best HS games I have seen in person:

#3 Laurel County 21 over #1 Lafayette 20 (1980) - George Adams was supposed to run wild on the Cardinals. A sportswriter for the Herald Leader predicted a 33-13 win for the Generals and stated that 'Laurel County is overrated and Adams could rush for 300 yards in this one if he wants to.' Prediction: 33-13 Lafayette. Adams returned the opening kickoff for a TD. Then after a 3 and out for the Cardinals, on the first play from scrimmage, the Lafayette QB faked a pitch and went the distance. Inside of the first 2-3 minutes, the Generals jumped out a 13-0 lead. Then Laurel County reeled off 14 points to take a 14-13 lead at the half. Laurel County held on for the win, I think the score was 21-20. Funny part was that after the game, Lafayette dropped to #2 in the polls, the #2 team moved to #1 and Laurel County stayed at #3.

North Laurel 26 over #8 Madison Central 23 (double OT) - 2005 - Madison Central hadn't lost a district game in 4 years and had dominated in the majority of those games. North Laurel was 2-6 on the season, and had lost 4 of those 6 games by a TD or less. Neither team had their UK signee available (Warford for MC and Cessna for NL). On paper, this was a blowout. Somebody forgot to tell North Laurel that they didn't have a chance. NL took the early lead, MC came back and neither team could pull away. MC led 13-7 with 7 minutes remaining. NL put together an 80 yard, 7 minute drive to tie the game 13-13 with around :30 remaining, but MC blocked the go ahead PAT to send the game to OT. In the first OT, NL scored a TD and kicked the PAT. MC matched and the second OT started tied 20-20. MC was held to a FG, and on 3rd down, NL scored the winning TD. It was senior night at North Laurel and a group of seniors who had their hearts ripped out so many times that season, left North Laurel with a memory for a lifetime.

Best game I did not see in person, but saw the on TV was the legendary Brohm v Bush, Trinity v Male state title game. Talk about big play after big play. Just a remarkable contest.

I was at Putnam Stadium that night. Fantastic venue for high school football.

CovCath expected to be playing Russell that night and may have overlooked the Tomcats. The Tomcats were playing at a very high level at that point of the season and very easily could have won. Very exciting game that no doubt was a tough one to lose for Ashland.

So does that mean I'm not allowed to mention Kurt Bovard and the corner of the Bluebird endzone??? :D :D :D

According to the article it sounded like it was being published because they are honoring THAT particular Ashland squad at the game this Friday against Ironton. It has something to do with their Class' 20th reunion. :thumb:
