South Oldham 22 Waggener 16 OT

Featured Replies

One long losing streak ends (South's 19 game losing streak); another extends (Waggener has now lost 16 straight)

Sloppy at times, but close and competitive throughout. Very entertaining game for Homecoming 2009.

South had two touchdowns called back by penalty; Waggener one.

South had two PATs blocked; Waggener had one PAT blocked and a FG blocked.

Dragons ran for 250+ yards, with sophomore Michael Gray leading the way with 132 yards and a score.

The Dragons earn the win in OT when Jake Nichter plows in from one yard out on second down...

Good for south, no kids should have to endure a losing streak like that...good luck next week

Congrats to South Oldham. We scrimmaged them this preseason, glad to see them break the streak.

Lots of fun watching the celebration. Kids pouring onto the field as if they had won the state championship. Coach getting a Gatorade bath. Lots of smiles.

Losing streaks make you cherish those wins all the more...

Happy for them- they work hard a deserve some success. This team easily could have been 4-0 right now.

Way to go Dragons!! Let's hope it's the first of many!!!

Why has South Oldham's program dipped so much?

When they were in the district with the NKY teams they had some very nice teams.

South has undergone a lot of turnover at the head coaching position. Hard to stay "up" when there's so much upheaval. When Clay Holbrook took over two years ago, he basically had to start over because of the lack of continuity. The three coaches before him: One coach left to go to another program; another decided teaching / coaching wasn't for him; another didn't have his contract renewed for non-coaching reasons. Last year, the Dragons had less than 10 seniors, and most of them didn't start. It was essentially a JV team trying to play a Varsity schedule...and the Varsity schedule included Oldham County (top 10 5A), North Oldham (top 10 3A), Eastern (top 10 6A), North Bullitt (Top 10 4A), Nelson County (6A), Shelby County (6A), etc... with predictable results.

South probably won't be world-beaters this year, but they're showing improvement as those youngsters mature... They've got a solid parent group trying to create a new attitude among the players... remember, South doesn't exactly have a long football tradition. This is something they are trying hard to build. Though they've had some very good teams - and were state semi-finalists in the early 90s - they've only had the chance to host a playoff game once (since 1989), and that game was moved to Cardinal Stadium due to field conditions...

Happy for them- they work hard a deserve some success. This team easily could have been 4-0 right now.

4-0 Really? they barely got out of the back field a few games this year.

Gotta agree with Rockne...despite the fact that South has struggled mightily on offense this year, they've been in every game so far. It wouldn't have taken many breaks for them to be 4-0. They had plenty of opportunities against Woodford...narrowly lost to Henry, and had too many mistakes with the ball in the red zone against North Bullitt.

Of course, they were a play away from losing last week against Waggener...and becoming 0-4.

Still, Knute's right...South's much improved over last year, especially on defense.

This week's game will be exciting because of the North-South rivalry...
