The Pirates steal a victory from the Cougars clutches in a very wild last minute and a half.

 

This is exactly what a young Belfry team needed. A loss here would have been another blow. But pulling this one out the way it played out is a great boost heading to Whitley Co next week.

Man this Pirate team has some heart. This team never quits no matter what the situation.. This team will be one to be reckoned with in the 3A scene after all!

Congrats to the Pirates. This was a road game against the 5A #7 team wasn't it?

Yes it was.

 

With a 20-17 lead, LCC had the ball and fumbled it over to Belfry with 1:50 left on a play that would have given them a 1st down and sealed it.

 

Belfry starts off on their own 25, Varney lines up at QB and busts a run for over 50 down to the 30 of LCC. After burning their last timeout, and losing 5 yards, Varney scrambles on 3rd down, starting left, turning back and dropping way behind the line of scrimmage. He fires a miracle shot to the end zone and finds Corey Charles back there for the TD.

 

But the Pirates get a celebration penalty that is assessed on the XP. Varney kicks the 34 yard XP over the field house for the 4 point lead, forcing LCC to score a TD.

 

Varney kicks off a squibb kick, and a LCC player breaks free on his way for a TD but he gets run down from behind by (who else) Thomas Varney.

 

After a few plays, Belfry intercepts a pass for the win.

 

Hats off to Letcher Central, they had a good team and they played well enough to win but came up short.

3rd and 15 with 50 secs? left and no timeouts and LCC lets a Belfry player get behind them. How does this happen?

That is a heartbreak loss for the Cougars.

Impressive win for Belfry! I think they are starting to gain their stride.

Varney did intercept the pass to seal the game. Congrats Pirates!!

I was standing at the endzone watching that last play unfold, I knew something was about to happen because it was all in slow motion, the QB was scrambling, the receiver was waving his arms, the pass, the two defenders were moving on top of him and the leaping catch at the one. #19 concentrates on the ball, catches it and pushes into the enzone...the crowd erupts. And yes caught up in the moment, me and another former Belfry player pile into the scrum and congragulate the players.

 

This is a very young team with lots of talent that is going to be force to be reckoned with in the years to come. I don't know how far they will go this year, but after putting together and playing hard for two entire halves last night those young men have shown the they certainly have earned the right to be called Belfry Pirates.

 

All I can say about LCC and Coah Howard is that they have an awesome young team too and they are going to be a force in 5A as well. They are very good.

I don't mean to be a complete downer. Belfry is young at many positions but as always there are many Senior contributors. Varney will be gone next season for example as will Chancey Sisco and others.

 

I think Belfry needs to keep their eye on THIS SEASON. The Pirates will probably be a bit outmatched deeper into the playoffs but I think playing this great schedule will have them battle tested.

 

All they can do is keep playing as hard as possible, and keep listening to coach.
