Congrats to the Tomcats on a very good road win. Belfry is never bad, just some years are better than others. With the exception of last week :sssh: I am glad to see the Tomcats winning.:thumb::thumb:

Great win on the road for the Tomcats. Belfry is always tough, and I'm sure they will make another deep run in the 3A playoffs this year. The best news of the night though was the news that there are 450 kids in the JFL program. That's the way you build a program. :thumb:

Ashland 267 yards rushing (37) to Belfry's 297 (48) on the ground. Varney had 221 of those.

 

For Ashland Rodgers rushed for 112 yards in 8 plays and Alber gained 109 on 19 carries.

I listened to most of this one. It sounded like Varney really put on a show for Belfry but Ashland had a little too much in the end.

What a great night of high school football.

 

When Belfry was down 14-0 early, and showing very little spark, I thought it might be a long night. They came up with a couple big plays and went in to halftime down 14-7.

 

Then they grew up a LOT in the 2nd half. I was very proud of the way they fought and clawed to stay in the game and put themselves in a position to make a run at the end. That will pay big dividends down the road, even though they came up a little short. It was a great gut-check game for a young team who is coming into their own.

 

Ashland has a good team and they were fun to watch. I was expecting a lean and quick team who runs hard and that is exactly what they are. They should have a lot of success down the road.

I'm happy with the 2-point win. Belfry is a good team and hard to beat at home. This will help the Tomcats get better. Varney had a great game. The Belfry FB was good too. I believe that Belfry will be a factor in the 3A play-offs - as they continue to improve week to week.

 

Rogers had a break-out game 8 carries for 112. We'll hear his name a lot more I predict. With Carter gone, he got the nod - and knew what to do.

 

Alber is just a beast. He gets his the hard way. And he picked up the 4th down and 1-yard to go play that we just had to have late in the game to hold on for the win.

Yes, thats right. Ashland had the ball first in the 2nd half and couldn't move the ball. Belfry scored quickly after the punt to make it 14-7. :thumb:

 

The Pirates outscored them 20-8 in the 2nd half.

 

Rogers was a killer on the counter play. Ashland had it available in the 1st half anytime they wanted it. Belfry finally started defending it a little better in the 2nd half.

This is a great post. The way you build a successful program, is to get them playing young and often. Get the kids to the stadium on friday night and make it really something to look forward to for the kids. It should be a big honor for any kid in the Ashland system to run onto Putnam Stadium. I think that has been missing for sometime. Maybe with this news, the Tomcats can get back to where they belong.
