August 23, 200917 yr Those are the 500 or so that remain at Northpoint. Oh. Well then strike my last post. I was under the impression everyone was being shipped out.
August 23, 200917 yr Author Oh. Well then strike my last post. I was under the impression everyone was being shipped out. They shipped out 700 and kept 500 that are considered no risk. I guess that means they weren't involved.
August 23, 200917 yr It's a medium-security prison run by the state and has been there since around 1980 I believe. My Father-in-Law worked there from its beginning until he retired about three years ago. He was actually hurt (concussion) in the first prison riot there back in the early 80's. From what I have heard, all inmates are accounted for and control has slowly come back. However there is severe damage to several buildings. My biggest (and most selfish) fear is that the damage may be so severe as to cripple the facilities' ability to stay open. With so much state financial issues, "rebuilding a prison" might be beyond what is possible. They could just transfer all the inmates to other places (overcrowding them) and close Northpoint down. I hope not. I wonder if part of the problem is what every state is facing; overcrowding of current prisons (few new ones being built), which leads to more "hardened" criminals being placed in "medium security" facilities that aren't able to keep the inmates in check as well as maximum places. I hope they rebuild it with prisoners doing the labor. That would save some money, and would keep the prison in Boyle County.
August 23, 200917 yr Those are the 500 or so that remain at Northpoint. That's not necessarily true. I know someone who is (well was until this incident) incarcerated there, and he was shipped to LaGrange...
August 23, 200917 yr I worked there for a year before I became a police officer in somerset. This was a long time coming. They get what they want all the time and when they were punished they could not take it. I had several good friends working that night and they did a great job restoring order to the training center. August 23, 200917 yr Author I picked a great weekend to be gone. It was pretty bizarre here for a few hours.:ohbrother:
August 24, 200917 yr Yeah grown men have the option to sit around all day and play playstation. The officers do the best they can. As much as they complain about the food vendor, Aramark, I ate it it's not bad. It could be worse. Many issues need to be addressed after this event concerning the inmates. From what I understand the response from other agencies was great along with the cert team. Edited August 24, 200917 yr by rockmom R13
August 24, 200917 yr From what I've heard, this all began over a week ago with a fight amongst races. When the inmates found out they were going to be on lock-down for 23 hours a day, they didn't like it, and started setting things on fire.
August 24, 200917 yr That is partially true. But the main reason is they think they are being starved to death and the cantean prices are high, which they are. But too bad for them Edited August 24, 200917 yr by rockmom R13
August 24, 200917 yr From what I've heard, this all began over a week ago with a fight amongst races. When the inmates found out they were going to be on lock-down for 23 hours a day, they didn't like it, and started setting things on fire. It began on Tuesday with a group of inmates (about 15) getting into a fight with two other inmates (different ethnicities) over "something stolen." With that incident came the lock down. On Friday, the Warden gave "limited privilidges back" and that's when the fires were set. At least that's the official version.
