Question for Pro-Gun People.

I always hear the lame argument that having a gun will protect you. I don't really buy the notion where many crimes are prevented by having a gun. Honestly, I think a dog is a much better detterent to crime than any gun. With that being said, can I see some statistics that show gun ownership actually prevented crime?

I've posted them on here before, but when I get home from work I'll see what I can do about posting some again.

My gun won't bail on me for food....

If someone broke into my home and they had a gun already, I'm not sure how much mine would help me. If someone broke into my home and didn't have a gun, I'm not sure they would stick around for me to get it. I keep one "in case," but outside of a small window of events I'm not sure how much it would help to prevent a crime.

You are talking about two different things here - protection if a crime occurs and guns being a deterrent to crime. I would probably agree with you for the most part that guns don't necessarily deter crime, as criminals don't give a ton of forethought into whether the person they are victimizing is armed or not. However, I don't think it's a lame argument in the slightest that having a gun can protect you should you become a (potential) victim.

It's harder to conceal a dog....

At least, I can't get one in my pocket... although a chihuaha might fit in my toga.

Actually, I saw on Ch. 18 just a few months ago where a drunk attempted armed robbery at someone's house, so the owner of the house held him down at gunpoint, called for his son who also had a gun and waited for the police to pick him up. His last quote was something to the effect of, "I'm just thankful we had a gun...if we hadn't we probably wouldn't be here right now."

Thoughts on this motto.

. Remember this motto ... An armed society makes for a more civil society!

I disagree...only the unarmed are civilized. The armed feel no compulsion for civility...they have guns and can force do whatever they want...that's their right. :D

No, criminals that don't care fits your description, but legal gun owners are generally the most civil as well as the most law abiding. :thumb:

At least one incident of fact:

BTW..the second amendment is not about hunting (or preventing crime) as she points out at the end.
