Herald Leaders High school football preview: The state's best players

You are exactly right, no dig on Antonio taken. The fact is that the KY press doesn't cover much of anything that happens in Western KY, especially at the 2A level. To get noticed by a Lexington newspaper speaks volumes about how far FC football has come. The majority of the media coverage is on NKY, Louisville, & Lexington, which is understandable because that is where the KY population base lives.

FC football started getting on the map with Marcus McClinton going to UK followed by Micah Johnson the next year along with Leonard Gordon to Notre Dame. I believe that 2006 is the only season FC hasn't had an All-State player since McClinton broke through the barrier.

Antonio is for real, no hype with him. He will be playing at the D1 level next season - just may not be at QB. Glad you got the opportunity to see Antonio play; we will miss him after this season.

This was a coaches poll, not the media.

Sure, but the same principle applies -- possibly to an even bigger extreme. Coaches east of I-65 would have no clue who he was if it weren't for the state championship appearances.

Agree. Just pointing out the fact that it was a coaches poll not media.

Congrats to Antonio Andrews of Ft. Campbell for making this list. A player from a small 2A school in Western Kentucky has to be truly exceptional to get noticed by the KY media.

Antonio is the real deal and should be in the mix for "Mr. Football".

Seriously??? Everyone has known about Ft. Campbell for at least 4 years. Everyone also knows that they have won 2 state championships in a row, against a very good NKY team. Everyone knows who you are. Also, I think even w/out the state championships, an athlete like that, at a school that has recently had 3 kids go DI, means that his name would have gotten out. He's a stud player.

You win consistently and the respect and noteriety will come. Breathitt County gets infinitely more coverage and respect than they did prior to winning back-to-back titles and 42 straight games in the process. Now, they typically get mentioned just on name recognition alone...sometimes we're even overrated. In the past, that would have never happened.

Teams like Breathitt, Belfry, Bell County, etc...they wouldn't get much coverage if they hadn't become consistent winners. It will work the same for the western part of the state, including Ft. Campbell.

JMO

Smith from Seneca is out for the season, so why would he be included on the list? Sure he was the top rated Qb prior to his injury, but if he's not playing he shouldn't be listed.

He should be included because he's still one of top 50 players in the state...more guys on this list will be injured throughout the year but that shouldn't mean they get scratched off the list.

Not taking anything away from Andrews, because I've seen him in a few games and know he is an outstanding player, but if he had not been on back-to-back state championship teams, he would have had a much more difficult time getting noticed.

He may have been on back to back championship teams, but C.J. Kropf was the quarterback the first year, so it may not of had the impact you all are talking about, not trying to take anything away from him. And I was in Iraq, so I am not sure how much he played in that game.

I remember him being an impact player on defense two years ago. He made several big plays in the playoff game against Bardstown that impressed me.

Congrats to Jacob Russell from Anderson County. Nobody works harder than this young man. Three sport athlete who excels on the field and in the classroom. Should be an outstanding college player.

Thank you for serving our country!

Congrats to the LCA players who made it:

Domonique Hayden, Lex. Christian 5-8 225 Sr. RB/LB

Zach West, Lex. Christian 6-5 275 Jr. OL

Lucas Witt, Lex. Christian 6-1 175 Sr. QB

I still can't believe there's a kid named "Tron" out there. All I can think of when I see that name is the Dave Chappelle character.

"Come and see how Tron is livin"

C.J. Croft was the QB in '07, (second team All-State). Antonio Andrews did not play any QB in that title game. As a matter of fact, his brother Olin Andrews was a bigger contributor to the team in '07. There was a lot of worry as to who would step up and replace the irreplaceable C.J. Croft, an honor student in the classroom and tough three year starter at QB.

Then along came a pleasant surprise named Antonio Andrews. Last year was his first year as a starting QB; just think what he will accomplish this year with a complete grasp of the QB position.

It was Antonio's brother Olin Andrews that you remember in the Bardstown game. Antonio was a sophomore in '07 and spent most of his time leading the JV team at QB to an undefeated season.
