Just a little FYI for everyone...give Simon Kenton 3 years and they will be extremely tough. They have more basketball talent (as a whole) than I can remember anyone having in their Freshman class this year.

Just read the other post on here and how some BGP talk about all these kids as studs, big time, great, etc. etc..... they are not. They are good high school players. You read a lot of names on here and I've seen many play. Great kids and solid players. But, yes I think people over rate how good the 9th region players are.

I kind of get what you are saying, dont know I would start a thread about it. But I have heard like Cov-Holmes has 3 D1 players in thier senior class, that's going overboard but fans from everwhere overrate thier guys. Dont get me wrong Holmes does have some of the best High School players in the state.

The same can be said for all fans of all schools, but the bottom line is that Holmes will be the team to beat this year and Highlands and Boone County will be close behind. That is on a state level. You do not get to that level with overrated players.

All I know is 08-09 State Champs are from Nky!

 

Good point but, thats just one year Nky Isn't as good as some think. If you took the champs from most years I would say most teams are from some where else in the state. Thats not to say Holmes is bad because they pretty dang good but most years they ain't that good.

You have no idea what your talking about. Holmes always has a good team in the area and usually one of the best in the state. Look at history.

A poster made a point in a girls basketball thread and it got me to thinking, so I did a little research.

 

We always here how good basketball is in NKY but over the past 29 years, only 5 times did a NKY team make it to the championship game.

 

Simon Kenton (1981) and Holmes (2009) have won it.

Holmes (1990 & 2008) and Highlands (1997) have been runnerup.

 

I would think that an area the size of NKY and the supposed talented teams from NKY, there would be more appearances and championships from the NKY area.

 

What is the reason for NKY not having the success at the state tournament that it should?

 

I also believe Holmes had a runner up (should have been a championship) in 1978. This team was led by Doug Schloemer and had Dicky Beal at the point as a sophomore. The championship game was embroiled with controversy due to Charles Hurt clearly goal tending and the call was missed by the officials.

Two simple reasons IMO, and both have been stated on here:

 

1. Too many High Schools compared to Central KY and Louisville which spreads out the talent dramatically.

 

2. 9th region which has most of the larger schools, has traditionaly had hugely different officiating vs. most of the rest of the state (they don't allow physical play especially on the perimeter), which results in adjustments when they get to the Sweet Sixteen.

 

That said, I think we've faired pretty well in a one class system, considering most of the schools up here are relatively small. Pretty good history in the All "A" and very competitive in the classed sports. Holmes looks to be a power in hoops for years to come, and we do OK in football and the "A" hoops.

NK AAU teams have always done very well in the state tourney and nationally which would indicate the talent is here, but again spread out among too many schools and that hurts come Sweet Sixteen time!!
