August 2, 200917 yr That is what would happen to those cars if they did not go into this program. People would sell them to be used for parts or for someone who needs it to drive; which is the problem. The government I assume is trying to make those kinds of cars extinct. But then you don't get the benefit of the savings on fuel that is part of this bill. FWIW, I believe that only the transmissions must be scrapped. The rest of the vehicle can still be parted out. Point is, there are those that can't afford these cars that the government want you to buy. What about them?

Any car that got more than 18 MPG did not qualify. Probably more fiscally responsible for that 1st time buyer to get a little 15 year old 4 banger, than the 15 year old 8 cylinder any way.

My 13 year old Grand Am trade in is still out there somewhere. It didn't qualify for the program, but it was still running when I signed it over. I agree with MC here...there are still going to be many older model cars that people can buy cheaply...and there will be a better chance now that they are not gas guzzlers.

The "clunkers" have to qualify as being bad for the environment and bad on gas. No body wants a car they have to fill up for 40 dollars every 5 days, and this program should help prevent people from having to do that.

Depends on how much they drive and how bad the truck is I guess.

Many have canceled hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising. As senator Jim DeMint said recently, “the federal government went bankrupt in one week in the used-car business, and now they want to run our health care system.” Senator John McCain said “Within a few weeks we will see that this process was abused by speculators and people who took advantage of what is basically a huge government subsidy of corporations that they already own.” Senator Claire McCaskill, Missouri Democrat, said she “will vote no on any extension” of the clunkers program, saying the “idea was to prime the pump, not subsidize auto purchases forever.”
August 2, 200917 yr Some info if anyone is interested: What you Need to Do To find out if your car meets the eligibility requirements, go to the government's website Cars.gov or Fuel Economy.gov. The EPA must list its combined city/highway mileage as 18 mpg, or worse. You must have owned it, with Registration and insurance papers to prove it, for one year. And it must be a 1983 or newer model: gas guzzlers from the 1970's need not apply. The problem is that very few cars meet these requirements. It primarily applies to SUV's and Pickups. And on July 29th, the EPA admitted it has changed the mileage numbers of nearly 200 cars and SUVs. About half no longer qualify as clunkers, the other half did not qualify until now, but now they do. My question: Why are they doing this the week the program is rolled out? How much more confusion do we need? Link
August 2, 200917 yr Unless they have a need for a truck. What then? I got an 82 chev 3/4 ton. Trucks last longer than cars. They're out there. How many 1st timers "need" trucks anyway? Has to be a small %.
