Well, not sure if they meet your qualification as "powerhouse" teams, but Louisville Manual and Beechwood both added Highlands games this year. Beechwood of course has the titles but they are 1A so that may not be the powerhouse you are referring to. But at least two KY schools stepped up to face Highlands. Plus Ryle has agreed to play Highlands twice.

If you read post #28,Ryle is one of the 6A teams that I was talking about. I have a lot of respect for anybody that agrees to the birds twice!! As for Manual,they are a powerhouse,but I'm not sure if they are on the same level of Lou.X and T right now. (JMO)

As Road Runner pointed out, we needed to do this to fill out the schedule. We were kind of thrown a loop when Holmes was permitted to drop down to 4A (which by the way, I whole heartedly agreed with). Nonetheless, it caused what is normally a difficult task for Highlands (and I'm sure other schools with strong football programs) to become even a little more difficult.

 

I know that there were talks with a certain Lou. powerhouse school to schedule a game in the week of what turned out to be the second Ryle game, but that school didn't want to play us right before the playoffs. Which I can understand. Certain coaches like to use that week to accomplish certain things and don't want to have a big game that week. Don't ask which school it was because I've been asked not to disclose the identity so you'll have to trust me (Highlands doesn't want the "they are ducking us" stuff out there on sites like this because it just makes it harder to schedule those teams in the future).

 

We had the opportunity to schedule a couple of other teams in the week of the second Ryle game before we committed to Ryle, but they were far away and those schools insisted on a home game. From what I was told, Dale elected not to go that route to save money (a big issue these days for all schools and certainly Highlands) and because Dale felt that Ryle had a stronger team. Plus Ryle's coach was willing to play us twice. Warner in my opinion "get's it" and realizes the benefit of playing programs like Highlands. I know some Ryle fans aren't too keen about it because of the possibility it could prevent them from making the playoffs in a tie breaker situation, but Warner must think the benefits of playing Highlands outweighs that negative. In my opinion there is no school in the state of Kentucky that could possibly better prepare a team to play Trinity than Highlands. Kudos to Coach Warner.

St. X Louisville played Highlands in 05, and 06. If I remember correctly, X won both of those games, and 05 was the worst Highland's loss that I have ever witnessed. Might want to let sleepin dogs lie.

Highly doubt that.

 

There's no doubt that being declared the national champion is a rather daunting task for a smaller school in Ky. But that's Mueller's goal for his year's team. Is it realistic? I understand your thinking, but Mueller does what he does to motivate his players. Winning another state championship is for sure a goal, but he wants the kids really, really focused on going 15-0 and seeing how high they can be nationally ranked. Might as well shoot for the top, wouldn't you agree?

Thank you for the explanation. I understand. ON all accounts. Cannot fault the "Lou. Powerhouse Team" - whoever that might be. To play H would be better at the beginning of the season - not right before playoffs. Also understand H's desire avoid long travel as well as to not have to do a "road game."

 

Kudos to Ryle. It just seemed very rare to me for teams to play each other

2x- during the regular season.
