My usual response when people ask me for a buck or two at the gas station is that I payed with a credit card. :lol:

 

"I don't have any cash, sorry". That's a good one, and it's usually true for me.

I had a group of people and they said they were out of gas going to Cincinnati and they needed some money to just get back. I told him I'd like to see his gas meter to see if he was lying, sure enough he was on empty (so I felt like an idiot). I only gave the guy a dollar because he was holding like 2.50 in his hand and I figure his junk car never got above a quarter tank anyways.

"Don't carry cash"

 

In college I was a cocky little guy so I would say "no I don't have any money to give you but I could use some money. Can you spot me a few dollars?" Bums would start yapping and I would laugh and walk away.

I have a couple of instances in which this happened:

 

Myself, CatsCatsCats and his brother were in Cleveland to watch games 1 & 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. It was the Thursday between the games and we had nothing to do were going to a bar near our hotel to get some drinks when a guy walked up to us claiming that he had just gotten out of jail after a year long stay. He said that he needed $17 to buy a bus ticket from Cleveland to Mansfield. I felt bad for the guy and gave him $20, he probably scammed me, but ah well.

 

Last week while in Jacksonville, my uncle and I were at a gas station and a man was pleading with anyone that would listen to him that he and his wife were headed to Key West fro vacation and that he needed a couple of dollars for gas to get home where he had forgotten his wallet. He looked normal enough so I filled up his tank. I'm a sucker for these kind of people.

IMO, if the guy were trying to scam you, he probably wouldn't have told you that he just got out of prison, because less people feel pity for a criminal, ya know?

 

Anyways, alcohol or the pursuit of it can cause me to be a bit more "generous". I'll never forget running away from a crackhead hobo in Destin when I was 16 because we didn't want to buy crack or weed off of him, although that's probably a story better saved for PMs. :lol:

I very seldom give in these instances. Especially when you are able to start such a thread and get similar stories from other people. Coincidence? You decide.

 

I very seldom give because my brother once had a "homeless" guy beg him for money because he was hungry. My brother was on his way to Quiznos and he said he would go in and get a foot long sandwich and give him half. The "homeless" guy, that was hungry, refused it instead only wanting money.

I had a similar situation filled up my car in Erlanger, guy drove up said he was trying to get home to his kids in Louisville needed some gas. I gave him $5.00.The very next day I was at a Florence gas station in my wife's car, same guy, same story. This time I used a few choice words and came at him, he drove off.
