I heard that too but it just seems awfully soon with Brock just fighting in July and that event being in September.

 

I really doubt right now that they sign Fedor because his manager wont agree to any deal unless they work with his stupid M-1 crap and I really dont see the UFC giving in to that. Fedors brother Aleks said in a recent interview that the UFC's contracts are flexible but that the manager Vadim is trying to push his business projects thru Fedors fights.

 

Basically what many thought all along just never thought we would hear it from someone like him to confirm it.

I highly doubt it. Plus it gives them someone to hate and they can hope he gets beat every time out. If casual sports fans continue to watch Lesnar more and more which will happen it becomes MMA fans vs. casual fans for his events. No matter what it is good for White and company.

I'm just curious as to what is your logic behind this statement. Everything I read and heard from the "casual fan" about UFC 100 is that they were turned off by Brock's antics and they will not order another pay-per-view.

B/c everyone I know that doesn't order PPV's regularly loved it and they will order the next one he's in. The UFC got more national sports and news coverage than ever before after the fight. It can't be bad. I doubt that casual sports fans that don't follow UFC were turned off by it. In fact I'd say it's the exact opposite.

I totally disagree. Find me a sports writer that was hooked after Brock's antics in UFC 100.

 

For every anecdotal story you have from casual fans that would order it, I have one from people that were disgusted and won't. I even have several who were mariginal UFC fans that have now decided they will no longer watch thanks to Brock's behavior.

 

Every single piece of publicity in the national news was negative. Dana spet the next week or so doing damage control. I can not see the benefit. I guess the numbers will tell us. Let's see the buys for UFC 101 compared to UFC 99 (not fair to compare UFC 100 because it is an outlier as the best UFC event in terms of buys by far; UFC 101 won't compare).

What was there to be disgusted about? If you tune into to watch grown men try to beat each other into submission and one gets beat into submission isn't that getting what you paid for? Why would casual sports fans (not MMA fans) not want to see a guy destroy his opponent and then let him know about it? I think it was the best interview of 2009 by far. It was true emotion and not cookie cutter bull. He was genuine. I'm tired of all of these same answers to the same questions. Like Clyde mentioned in the Ben R thread we don't know these athletes b/c of their interviews. We know what they want us to know. At least there was something real there.

 

If you don't think Lesnar is the biggest draw for UFC and it has almost nothing to do w/ UFC fans I'm not sure what to tell you. To compare 99 and 101 would be great if I had any idea which one was better and who the biggest fighters were in those events and what they normally draw. I won't pretend that I do. Lesnar is great for the UFC and their bottom line.

When they say they won't watch because of Brock's antics, that is the casual fan rejecting Brock's antics. The same goes for the anecdotes I have heard from folks.

 

The reason why we would look at UFC 99 and compare buys with UFC 101 is to say there is a residual effect from UFC 100. If the is a tremendous amount of increased pay-per-view buys, we can say that Brock had an effect. If we see the growth continuing at the same level, the we can't say that Brock's antics were good for the sport. This sports growth is measured in viewers.

 

Dissing sponsors, disrespecting his wife and his opponent, and overall appearing to be a jerk is not good for the sport. You viewed it differently than I did and that is fine. Dana White viewed it the way I did, that is why he did damage control and that is why we won't see antics like that again from Brock or any other fighter that wants to be in the UFC long-term.

I think Dana White did public damage control, but in private is happily counting money. He got a chance to be on big time networks b/c of Brock.

 

All I'm saying about the 99/101 thing is which card has bigger fights? If it's comparable fighters then their might be a Brock effect. I'll guarantee you that Brock didn't hurt the UFC though. Every sport needs a bad guy. The same sport that had a guy go on a crazy police chase and dry hump a reporter is worrying about a little post fight celebration. Give me a break. I've ordered less than 5 UFC PPV's and Lesnar was involved in either 2 or 3 of them. I'll watch his next event too. So will all of my friends that watch almost every sport except UFC.

Its not bad. Its just viewed by a majority of the population as pretty extreme. I was just trying to point out that an interview will not be the sole reason someone stops watching the sport.
