June 24, 200917 yr The only thing I would add to the thread is to double-check the nutrition information on the protein supplements. Some protein supplements are high in calories, fat, and saturated fat and some aren't. I would try to stay with one with lower calories and fat, especially if you aren't trying to build muscle. The stuff HammerTime linked isn't bad.
June 24, 200917 yr BF, Protein Powder is the best way to boost Protein intake. You should have one gram of protein for each pound of body weight, every day. It is very hard to achieve that goal by just eating protein enriched food. So, Protein Powder is going to have to be part of the equation. Eating meats, red meat, chicken, tuna, and eggs will definitely help, but I would mix in two protein shakes per day as well. Whey protein powder, you can get with chain carbohydrates in it as well, which will be a bigger plus. I mix my powder with milk, instead of water, I like the taste better and I am more inclined to drink both shakes per day. Protein powder varies, but the protein powder that I am using now has 60 grams of protein per serving, two shakes equal 120 grams of protein. I weight 230 pounds so that is half my protein intake for a day. I also occasionally make a shake of milk, plain yogurt, ice, peanut butter, and my protein powder in the morning as a first meal. It is very filling, provides aprx 100 grams of protein and starts the day off ahead of the game in regards to protein. Simply fact, you are not going to get enough protein without supplementation. You would have to eat meat constantly all day to do that. Protein powder is a quick, easy, not bad tasting way to do it. Just get you a shaker (sold where protein powder is sold), the protein powder, and some milk, mix it up and drink. Easy. Protein powder can get expensive, but if you have a GNC close, it is on sale at the first of every month, I normally get one full price, around $40, and the second for half price, that last me and my son about one month.
June 24, 200917 yr In terms of protein powder, Optimum Nutrition is generally considered the "best". Take that for what it's worth. I've used the chocolate and it tasted good. I've always heard good things about Muscle Milk but have never tried it. It's a bit expensive.

I usually buy a 5lb container every six weeks or so. It cost's about $38 + shipping.

June 24, 200917 yr No more than half your daily protein intake should come shakes, you MUST get some from food. I drink 2 EAS myoplex shakes a day, very tasty, then tuna, steak and chicken. LOTS of meat. The chocolate EAS shake is really good IMO
July 6, 200917 yr Author Just wanted to let you guys (who gave me all the good advice) know that I've been using the protein powder for a week or so now. I went with the cheap stuff, just to start. I got the Meijer house brand with Active Protein Complex. I know it likely isn't the best stuff, but I just wanted to see how it would go, without paying too much. However, a couple days ago, I got on Bodybuilder.com and ordered some Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein. It should arrive in a day or two. I may not be working out, but my drink shaker is sure getting a workout. Between the protein powder and this amino acid stuff I have to drink, it gets "shook up" four times a day. I seem to tolerate the current powder okay, except that the shaker leaks a little and the drink doesn't digest well when used right before bed. I go back to the doctor tomorrow; but I had such a bad experience at the first appointment, and his ideas were so off-base, that it will -- if all goes well -- be my last visit. That's because an expert in the field has agreed to see me next week. It's a bit of a hike, up to Blue Ash; but from what I'm told, she's fantastic to work with, and it will likely be well worth the extra travel. I'll keep you posted, and let you know how I like the O.N. powder. Thanks again for the overwhelming response. I printed out all of your suggestions for reference as things go along.

Birdsfan...I assume you live in NKY? If so the BEST supplement company in the world is in your backyard. Beverly...I can tell you for a fact that MANY of the top professional bodybuilders in the world order from Beverly. Many of them are paid to hawk other products but use Beverly because they know that the quality is the BEST!! I actually have a video of Ronnie Coleman leading up to like his 6th Olympia title and the camera scans his kitchen and there is a jug of UMP sitting on his counter. He is paid by BSN. Rich Franklin called in and placed an order one day when I was there...this is the same Rich Franklin that was getting paid my Xyience and getting their product free. There is a reason Beverly has been around since the '60's and has never had to do major marketing or pay celebs to hawk their product. I have been in the health and fitness biz for a long time...and I can promise you all supplements arent equal!!!
