2009 Beechwood Freshman

Featured Replies

I heard that they have somewhere between 11 - 13 players. IMO, that may not be enough to field a team. Anyone know if that is true?

True

Wow, that's not good.

I know for conditioning, that's about all they have.

There are supposed to be a few new kids coming in that haven't been at conditioning. So maybe they will get up to 16-18? A lot of unusual movement this year with about a half dozen kids who would have been starters all leaving Beechwood for a variety of family related reasons. I can think of four kids who would have been key starters who are all going to other schools next year. It is going to be a very interesting freshman season for Beechwood, especially considering they are playing basically all 5A and 6A schools.

And the fact they pretty much pounded "all" of those teams last season...might be looking for paybacks!

Ocassionally people forget that Beechwood is mid-1A due to their sustained dominance. This is a stark reminder of the types of enrollment and participation battles that 1A schools face in order to field teams. Even the best will have a class here and there that is very small.

Absolutely agree.

Very true. This year's senior class is only 8 or 9 players. It is a real testimony to the program and coaches that Beechwood turns these kids into real football players and top tier teams year after year. And you have to give credit to the kids who buy into the program and work their tails off to make it happen. I know there are other programs who may work as hard but no one exceeds Beechwood's player's work ethic.

They not playing a district schedule this year?

Referring here to the Frosh. Beginning last year, all (or most) NKY schools with freshman teams became one large conference, whereas they were previously divided with 1A-3A playing together and 4A-6A playing each other.

My mistake. For some reason I thought they were refering to Varsity.

Yes, this is freshmen we are referring to, as the thread is titled. The 1A schools and some of the 2A still play their own schedule. Then the 4A-6A have one big conference, with Beechwood and I believe one or two other small schools (maybe NCC?) playing in the big school conference. Beechwood went undefeated and won the big school conference last year, with not much of a serious challenge in fact. But as someone posted earlier, it is looking like this coming freshman season will be an opportunity for payback for the big schools. Although someone told me that this year they are not going to have a playoff for a championship on the freshman level.

Mayfield deals with this problem every year, we only have 45 players play each year tops.
